i am looking at getting a well maintained 90k miles + e39 M5 as a daily drive. this daily drive will be doing circa 25k miles per year (mostly motorway).

how are general running costs? any examples please? not afraid of M car running costs having owned a E63 M6 and an E46 M3 in the past.

mostly, are they up to the job?

I've done 18k in mine in 16 months and its been ultra reliable, check the oil regularly and maintain it and you should have no bother.

Yes, there are others out there doing high mileages with no great problems (I only manage about 2k a year in mine though!) Looking in the classifieds you'll find loads for sale with 140k+ mileages so even with your intended use it will be a couple of years before it gets to 'average' mileage and plenty of those are still sound.

I cant think of a better car for motorway work.

If you can cover the cost of a lot of V Power and oil then you will be fine. I used to use mine for the odd business trip and would sometimes see the check oil light come on but as long as you keep some in the boot you will be fine.

As long as the car is set up right tyre wear isnt too bad considering the grunt it has.

Agreed, in my ownership mine has lived mainly on the motorway, epic comfortable cruiser and serious grunt on tap as required.

As i replied in your other thread....get it done! thumbup

My E39 M5 was cheaper as a high mileage daily driver that the E46 M3 for me so if you've had one of them previously i think you will find the costs comparable

i did 30k in two years in the e39 m5, its just covering the fuel bill. Plus they are quite old now...they would have to of had...

New rear diff seal
New calipers - prone to failing
Suspension bushes etc
belts

I averaged 21 mpg on a 3000 mile trip to tuscany.....with mixed driving....

I would suggest buying a 520d or 320d, and a boxster S...the saving on the fuel alone may make the sums add up....only based on the fact the E39 is getting on a bit...and will take some money to keep going......the upside the E39 m5s hold their money well....
