Just a quick post about M6 XCL (E63 M6 2005)
Discussion
You know those text search services you can use to look up the history of a car you're looking at buying? Well out of curiosity I just entered the registration of my old BMW M6 (M6 XCL) to see what would come up. What came up was essentially nothing. Never involved in an accident, never written off. I find this extremely interesting as I distinctly remember the snapping sound of the subframe breaking in two places and the bang of the side airbags deploying as I became acutely aware that "a dab of oppo" wasn't going to save this one.
The car didn't look in too bad shape, but it was a VERY high speed acident, which involved the rear right wheel hitting a curb stone side on and at speed. Side airbags deployed, subframe sheered in two places, rear wheel detached and suspension broken. The car was a total loss claim. I attempted to purchase the salvage from the insurers, but they refused to sell it to me. (They're not obligated to onbviously.)
I suspect that either:
The text services aren't that accurate and a full HPI report would show the accident on the cars history.
Or
The insurance company pulled a fast one and repaired the car without registering the category of damage.
If the repair was done properly, there shouldn't be much to worry about I guess. The new owner has a car with a new subframe, new suspension and the airbags reseated etc. Providing appropriately skilled professionals repair a car I'm of the opinion that they're bits of metal and generally a new subframe is as good as if not better than the one with 60k miles on it. If the car wasn't registered CAT D then the new owner won't be affected when he/she comes to sell it on. They probably payed the going rate and will get the going rate back. (The 8mpg in between night hurt a bit though.)
However, it still feels a little bit out of order if the insurance company has sold a car which has been in a high speed acident without informing the purchaser and subsequent owners of its history. Whether the work has been carried out to the highest standard or not, I think most of us would like to know if their car's broadsided a curb a full tilt, because there's always the question of "what if it's weakened the car structurally elsewhere that wasn't obvious, and just because of er, honesty, and common decency and professionalism and all things you'd expect from massive companies who expect it from you.
I hope that the text service is wrong. I hope a HPI report would confirm the cars history an that to new owner is completely aware and driving round with a big smile on their face because they got a really cheap M6 thanks to the letters CAT D on the paperwork.
If not, hopefully the owner's a PH'er and at some point types in their registration and finds this and can go about holding somebody to account! Hopefully I'm way off the mark as I say and HPI would show it all for what it is. If you are the new owner and you were unaware, I'm happy to provide pictures of the damage or be of assistance in any way poss!
Anyway, feel free to now mock my inability to keep a car on the black stuff!

It isn't the blue one at that dealership no. Although on the search the colour comes back as blue, it's "Silverstone Blue" which is actually more silver than blue. I used the same service to check the last recorded millage and it seems about right which makes me think it is the same car that the search is returning and that the plate hasn't been transfered. It could obviously also be that the insurance company simply haven't acted since they became the owners of the car and it's sat in a breakers yard since the accident. Either way, at least this post is out there now and hopefully if anybody ends up looking to buy it they might search PH or google and this will show up.
I know when I've bought cars in the past I always search the PH forums just to see if it's a former PH'er vehicle to find out as much as possible about it.
Shame if it is sat in a breakers yard, waste of a lovely V10!
