He did come to site, but i'm in southampton and he is based near Middlesborough, so it took him a few weeks to arrange a visit.
the total cost for the refurb was around £850, but part of that cost was from labour of my local BMW indy who did the removal, and they are not cheap. I think Steve charges around £700 (ish) for the drive in/out service but that would be at his workshops, really best to get him to quote as this was a couple of years ago.

He repaired my vanos about a month ago, very happy with his work. Someone on m3cutters is currently not getting any response from him either so maybe he's on holiday.

Phil Crouch at CPC automotive is also very talented at repairing VANOS, may be worth calling him, he is also much closer to Southampton!

His contact details can be found at http://www.cpcpe.com/page8.html

Yuo can run it with the Vanos disconnected. You just obviously won't get the increases in power at higher revs.

Does it not just need new solenoid seals?

If it's blown one of the Vanos covers off then you might get away with a new set of seals/gaskets and bolts. Apparently the tensile strength of the original soleniod cover bolts was not sufficient for the continued loading from the system, you can now get better quality (higher tensile strength) bolts but you will need to probably drill out the snapped bolts and helicoil the old threads, bit of a pain to be honest but a well documented failure mode.

I don't know that's the problem !! Is this a job BMW will do at a sensible cost ?

Thanks Tux

To be honest i think it's likley BMW would not be interested, they tend to want to replace the whole unit at around £2k cost.
As someone else suggested, Phil Crouch at CPC is a good shout if you can get it there.

Have a look first of all and determine exactly what has happened and what the damage. I know people who have lost all their oil through the cover but the bolts had just loosend and it only got a few quid to fix it themselves. Others may have sheared the bolts, which will require more work.

Clean all the oil up and post some pictures if you are unsure.

Here, follow this thread, its one that describes removing the coils.

Behind the coils are the o rings that fail and blow out oil.

Clean up, replace seals and gaskets and bolts ( you can order these kits from places like iridium engineering)

Straightforward job.

Although Mr. Vanos gets great reviews etc, I read often about people not getting hold of him, not answering calls , etc. This would put me off a little to be honest

Quick update guys here is a piccy of the damage part :

i have removed the front cover and the solenoid valves , there is oil everywhere !! looks like to top solenoid valve is damaged so i have just been over to Sycamore BMW to order some bits , they only do the solenoids as a complete unit .....yes you guessed it even with my trade discount they are £620 !! :yikees:

so the seals and gasket have been ordered and the hunt is now on for a replacement solenoid , anybody any ideas ?

thanks again for all the help .

ps. the broken off bolts were finger tight !!!
