Why the issue?
Clever and effective way of making a 6cyl engine that's otherwise hushed by forced induction sound fantastic.
Terrible imo, a situation where now we have to worry about whether the engine in a car with the standard stereo system will sound crap compared to one with the Harmon kardon upgrade.Clever and effective way of making a 6cyl engine that's otherwise hushed by forced induction sound fantastic.
How come Merc manage perfectly fine without this crap? GTRs sound good too.
It's pathetic, it really is. If an 18 year old lad was doing this in his Saxo there'd be much piss taking going on. I'm going to get one of these for my wife's 320D so it sounds special....

It wasn't artificial in the ST though
Granted it was resonated (whatever that means) and not through the speakers but its still not a real engine sound. I still don't think it's an issue. I read that the sound is something like 15% speakers and 85% real. Not sure how true this is. Had somebody not been clever enough to figure this out would anyone have even known? It does sound a bit Forza (computer gamey) but still sounds great.
This is a poor dig at a great car.
It's not as if a synthesiser is making a 320d sound like an M3. It's the actual engine of the car being tunnelled into the interior via a symposer. When you open the windows, the car still sounds great which is just insulated by the good build quality. I'm just grateful BMW managed to make a 1 series where the insulation is so good that they feel the need to do this.

But that's the point made in the thread, its not the actual sound. The OP says the actual induction sound is very different, not just quieter. It's not as if a synthesiser is making a 320d sound like an M3. It's what ///M engineers think it should sound like, not what it actually sounds like.

Completely agree. It's utterly pathetic. It's such a cop out to say it's what the engine sounds like. Real low point for BMW, they're too good -and the cars are too good- for this nonsense. I've no problem with them tuning the turbo noises or suchlike, that's what they should do, but to MP3 it is a sad state of affairs.Plainview23 said:

Have you been in one? It sounds 100% natural and utterly brilliant.
You would never ever know any different without threads like this.

I think I would bug me in the back of my mind that I was listening to special effects!

add it back in synthetically if you must, but BMW should not be trying to trick customers that the car sounds better than it really does. it almost seems fraudulent, think sound of an engine is a material factor in how many of us choose a car
