997 C2S to M3. Anyone done it?
Discussion
Haven't done that, but I've gone from a lovely '07 C2S to a 335i Vert and do you know what?
I don't miss the 911.........
Ok, its not as quick, road holding is not as good, but it's more comfortable, certainly quick enough and has more toys than Porsche are aware of.
Do I regret changing - no, not at all.
I thought about an M3 but the 335i does everything I want it to for less money so i can only assume if you want to spend more, the M3 would be better.
Edited to add,I also don't have to put up with the Porsche warranty problems either!

Had a 997c2s while my 996 turbo was in the garage being cocked up by Porsche cardiff. But thats another storey. Anyhow, I love the drive feel of the old porsche - like being in a little race car, but they are under specced and pricey for what they are. They are a bit like the apple computers of cars - twice the price, everyone has one and do the same job as other models out there. But you do still get one because it makes you feel good.
Now on my second M3, just as fast, just as good drive if not better and much more practical. Also, the stuff thats included like I drive music storage, bluetooth etc - mine even has an internet connection. Never use it, but its there. Had both coupe and saloon. Personally, I prefer the coupe as it looks much more special than the saloon.
Think of the M3 as a a 997 c2s with a boot and proper rear seats and at 1/3 less cost.

On porsche, chrono pack and audio upgrade is about the only one I would say you should have. You can get an aero kit which makes it look similar to a gt3, but it spoils the lines. Sports suspension and power pack are available, but the ride is firm anyway and the power is not that much extra.
As for the M3, sat nav and i drive are included. Bluetooth, privacy glass, edc, auto box and 19" wheels are all must haves as well as audio upgrade.

I have had my 997s cab manual since 05 and ran an E90 M3 manual saloon alongside for 3 years, so not quite the same.
Both cars will cost about the same to run (depreciation excluded) and straight line performance is very similar. The technology in the M3 with stuff like Nav and integration of phone and music will be worlds away from the 997, particularly if yours is a gen 1 car.
I'd say EDC is essential - it's better than PASM on the 997 with two useable settings for the road. DCT is a personal choice and if I got another M3 it would be a manual.
Other things if I were buying again is I would want 19" wheels, heated seats and up-rated hifi. Can't comment on competition pack but that is something I'd probably look for as well.

997 C2S and E90 M3 both on my current shortlist for next car. Test drive the E90 today and loved it. Great spec car with 19s, EDC and DTC but didn't realy like the saloon in white (needs the carbon roof). Hoping to test drive the 997 tomorrow - am thinking that being a manual, it may feel a little more involving and possibly slightly more fun at low speeds but the M3 was mightily impressive.

Really useful ta. Had a great long drive in my 997 yesterday and it was awesome. Just the dated technology is starting to erode the experience a little. I need to drive the m3 but it does look great in white with carbon roof!
I was there with my Cayman, loved the drive but was a bit tired of the slightly oldschool vibe of the 987/997 gen very lightly optioned cars.Got a 991 with the new interior and millions of options, but despite being newer and a lot more expensive it doesn't even come close to drive, and got bored of the toys very quickly and soon regretted it. Got rid at break even thankfully.
Get an extended drive in the M3 and tell yourself that the novelty of certain features may wear off, before you decide what to do.
went form a 997 GT3 (gen 1) to the M3.
love the M3.
911s are too small for the family now
to me the M3 feels much closer a car to the 997 GT3 than it does to a chipped 335i, its sharp, balanced and alive. so glad the M3 exists, can get close to 911 driving with a lot more space
only cons are that its quite thirsty if you care about such things, and guys with chipped 335is will tell you how much better value their car was - but my usual journey is not down a drag strip
