Looking for 6 series Convertible
Discussion
Hi all,
You will normally find me lurking about in the Porsche forum as I personally drive a 911 GT3 as a daily driver. My wife however loves the 2007 BMW 530D MSport which has been faultless for the last two years and almost (40k miles) and as a extra special birthday present this year (shes 40 but dont tell anybody) I am looking to trade this in for a 6 series convertible.
What I really want to know is which is the best model to go for. Bit of an open ended question I know as I am sure everybody will have a different opinion. Performance/Top end speed is not a major consideration as the GT3 more than suffices for any urge to for a spirited drive around the local country roads. What I would really like to know is which engine is the best economical/reliability and what are the optional extras to look out for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and a hint as to what sort of P/Ex I could expect for the old barge would be helpful too in determining what year/model I should be looking for. So if anybody is out there that has a 6 series coming up for sale soon and wishes to trade for a diesel Msport let me know.

I had 630i and now I drive M6.
In terms of fuel efficiency, 635d will be the best bet,
however I don't think your 5er will do direct p/x for 635d at the moment.
If your wife doesn't mind, 630i does good mpg and is nearly as identical as 650i.
It'll do over 30mpg on motorway whereas 650i or 645ci would struggle to get 25mpg.
630i does feel lighter and handles slightly better but the whole purpose of this car
lies on comfort anyways.. both are comfortable but 645/650i feel more chunky, heavy
on the other hand 630i feels lighter and turns better in corners.
If it's for your wife, I think I'd defo go for 630i, no reason to go for thirsty V8.
Useful advice I can give to you as a 6er driver is that you have to get 2006 onwards cars. (not LCI)
pre 2005 cars are known to have many many problems including gearbox, engine, etc.
I know this through having friends with many 6ers,
paying extra for 06 reg car would probably save you in the future when it comes to repairing.
hope that helps!
Cheers!

Thank for the tips Jhonky. I would definitely be looking for a 07/08 upwards and i would most likely go for the 630i as the performance would not be an issue as it is something my wife has no care for. As long as it is as comfortable to drive and as reliable as the 5 series we have now she will be more than happy. Thanks for the info on the M6 but as stated above the performance of an M6 woould be totally wasted on my wife and the extra fuel/insurance/running costs would not be worth paying for the occasional use I would get from driving it once or twice a week. If anything else comes your way please PM me as I am most certainly in the market for one now.

It really depends how she drives, my wife short shifts everywhere and is rarely above 3900- 4200 rpm so we changed her car to a turbo diesel and she loved it. The 630 needs plenty of revs.
The 6 will be auto I assume!? Majority are, and I wouldn't advise buying a manual. Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
