Afternoon,

In the last few weeks I have started to notice a rotational noise when driving >55mph, I would say it sounded like there was some mud or a large stone stuck to my tyre.

I have taken it to BMW, they replaced the prop shaft bearings and rubbers, which has made no difference what so ever. Beyond this they were stumped, the only suggestion (albeit a very costly one) was to try all new brakes and pads, however these were all replaced circa 9 weeks ago.

So does anyone else have any suggestions as to what this may be?

Cheers,

P

Start going round corners, does it appear when turning left or right............ or even harder left and right.

I currently have one, but it comes from weight transfer to the left. Its more than likely the rear break discs and pads. (thats where the noise is coming from) it goes away after i use the car properly, it doesnt get too much excersise during the week.

Seems to stay constant no matter what I do as long as the speed is >55Mph (turn, brake, accelerate etc)

Recently did a 500 mile trip to England and back, and it was present for the whole journey, however I would say it is slightly quieter now.........that could however be my mind playing tricks.

Most notable when travelling on very smooth tarmac.

did this appear after fitting the new brakes?

does it only do it under load or does it get louder when accelerating or decelerating?

Run your hands over the tyres treads - any feathering or cupping of the tread?

What happens if you (very gently and slowly) slightly apply the hardbrake at speed? Any change in the noise?

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, will give them all a go this afternoon.

it started around 6 weeks after the new brakes being fitted, so I think that can be ruled out.

The car had been parked up for a few weeks prior to the noise due to the snow, but I had over inflated the tyres to 39psi to prevent flat spotting, the mystery noise continues....

it appears to be worst when coasting on smooth tarmac, not under load.

Long shot, but...

Is the car parked outside? During this winter, I have left the car outside for 2 weeks without driving it, and the brake discs became heavily corroded due to salt exposure and of course the weather, and it took quite a few heavy braking maneouvres to clear them.

Would the disc not be scored if there was a stone stuck?

hmm, will jack it up and knock the wheels off see what I can find.

Probably not those causing the noise then.

Tried left foot braking while on the throttle to see if that changes the noise?

Thanks guys, I gave the handbrake a little work out driving along my drive way (half mile long!) I then took off all the discs and pads and reseated, the noise has gone! :-D

so one of the above worked
