E92 Warranty- To Extend or Not to Extend?
Discussion
I am soon to be buying a 2009 E92 M3 with 22k on the clock & FBMWSH.
The question is. Should I go and spend £800+ on a years warranty or stick the money in the bank and cross my fingers.
I am a first time M3 buyer and would appreciate some good honest advice from some of you out there with experience.
If the extended warranty is the way to go. Should it be direct with BMW or one of the alternative companies that say they provide a more comprehensive policy cover.
Your feed back would be much appreciated.

To be fair, if you were going to own any M car without a warranty it would be the E90/92 M3.
The early ones are over five years old now, and there must be a fair few with six figure mileages, yet they seem to be very reliable.
Even on the various forums, where you'll generally find someone with a tale of woe, there doesn't seem to be anything negative being reported about these cars.

A friend is looking at buying one and has been asking me about known faults. The early ones are over five years old now, and there must be a fair few with six figure mileages, yet they seem to be very reliable.

Couldn't think of any.
I just extended mine after the initial 3 years back in December, if you extend it straight away it's £57 a month with BMW (Mondial) If its lapsed its £80 odd.
Both prices are decent but for £57 it's daft not to in my eyes, it's huge peace of mind. Flip side is I ran my used E46 M3 with no warranty for 3 years and never had any issues up to 70K but I'm glad I have it on the E92

At £57 per month that looks like a lot of sense, particularly as you get roadside assistance included which would probably cost £100 for equivalent from the AA in any event.
The other thing to factor in though is how well you know the car - have you had it from new or did you buy it used. If you've had from new you may take the view that you as you know the history you would prefer to 'self insure'.
Remember that the warranty is not offered on a charitable basis - it is there for the warranty provider to make a profit - so for every horror story that gets blown out of proportion on the internet - there will be many people who are paying just for peace of mind and are not getting any financial return.
As an example, lots of scare stories about Porsche engines - my 997 is now nearly 8 years old - I've had it from new and I didn't take the extend the warranty. So have now saved myself 6 years of warranty costs and(hopefully not tempting fate!) the only thing I have had to pay for so far that might have been covered is a set of coil packs.

Personally I wouldn't drive an M car without warranty.
ThisEven at indy rates of £40-£50 an hour plus the cost of parts to fix any problems/niggles £800 won't go very far.................... Penny wise, Pound foolish springs to mind

have this dilemma in a few months - on an 2008 e90m3 - now with 46k on clock. i have no plans to sell the car and so the resale thing does not figure - but i remember with horror a year ago seeing the car "engine half power thing - blah blah - go to dealer" - after i put some non-super unleaded thing as there was no super available at the local garage.
at the time i did not realise this just a precautionary measure re fuel - and i started wondering if the ecu was f
ked - whether it would be an exhaustive process to determine from fault codes what problem was etc. my recollection was that some of the parts prices were quite expensive - anyway to cut a long story short - for peace of mind and the recovery etc - i probably will be weighing in.
i got the bmw one - from the dealer that looks after the car

I have a 2005 M3CS that I still maintain the monthly warranty on. Fully comp with no excess is £87 a month. It's added peace of mind and as the guys have stated above, I'd not consider running an M car without the Mondial warranty. Mine has more than paid for itself in the last 12 months.
I agree that if you are going down the M car road it makes sense (if only for peace of mind) to take out a warranty.I have looked at a warranty comparison site and it tends to indicate that "Warranty Direct" offers a more comprehensive policy cover. Has anyone had any dealings (good & bad) with Warranty Direct?
