I had a second key cut for my 2005 E60 M5 last week and picked it up on Saturday. It's the old style metal key which cost just over £130 from my local BMW dealer.

The car opens, starts fine and everything else seems to work.

However, with the second key in, the RDS doesn't seem to work. It shows the frequency (e.g. 97.2) and not the station name (e.g. RADIO 1). I can't find any option to turn on RDS. A bit of Googling found that the RDS option should be in the Set menu when you click on a radio station, but there is no RDS option?!

If I use the original key, the RDS is fine!

Any ideas chaps? I'm stumped.

IIRC, my old E39 Sport that each key had different settings for the radio and climate etc. I guess the idea is that different drivers have the car set up for them, so the problem may not be the key, just that you can't find the RDS setting!

Yes the key stores the radio stations and seat settings. If I get in my car (E65) with the spare key all the radio settings are different, as is the seat memory and the heater settings. I'm sure once you find where the RDS button is you'll be fine. I think in the E60 you have to 'scan' to get it to store the strongest stations and then click on an individual station to select the RDS tick box.

same as mine, or should I say the Mrs's key. I have never been bothered to scan or set so just don't use the other key!

Cool... glad to hear it isn't just me. smile

I (un)forunately don't have a missus so the spare key is just that... for emergencies if the main key is lost or stops working! So no biggy that RDS isn't enabled.

You can enable it, as has been said before you need to run a scan sand it will automatically add the station names once it RDS scans them. It will show them as scanned and then it's up to you to store them where you want on the timeline. The annoying thing is when I get the wrong key and the seat moves forward and up and I have to get in and spend a a good minute adjusting the mirrors, seat etc so I just get here to use this key that is kind of programmed for us both with the odd tweak!
