SMG Gearbox E46 Again 2001 M3 140,000 Miles.

Hi Again, My reverse gear selection problem seems to have sorted its self out after changing the gearbox oil ,special from BMW, the thing I do not understand is there a separate gearbox for the automatic transmission when it in AUTO mode or dose it share the gearbox fluid ????. Even my local BMW specialist is not sure. Any Help.

The SMG is a manual gearbox that has various electronic bits stuck to control cutch/gear selection along with some software to make it all work, one aspect of this software is an "auto" mode which will mimic an auto but isn't a true auto.

So in short, no there isn't a separate gearbox.

Exactly, and if your BMW 'Specialist' doesn't know that it's time to find another specialist.
