Hi All,

I bought an 2008 M3 Manual with EDC at the end of Jan with 27k miles from a main dealer (dundee bmw)... Below...

And since taking ownership of it i have had an uncanny amount of little issues :-(

firstly - within 3 weeks of ownership (and less than 200 miles) the fuel pump realy packed in - the EML came on and the faults shown were 'fuel pump failure - engine on reduced power'

I took it into BMW aberdeen and they diagnosed it as the realy for the pump, drove it home, wasnt convinced, car didtn feel that responsive, anyway, put it down to me not really having a feel for the car yet, did a long weekend away with it to the west coast, car ran quite well, with spell of serious speed and the odd feeling of 'not that quick/responsive etc' (for reference i have previously owned z4mc/e39 m5/various e30's etc.)

low and behold, i manged all those miles with no EML and on turning into my driveway the EML light came on!!

this time i took it into BMW and they diagnosed it as the 1st 02 sensor, left bank, it was replaced a few days later (because obviously main dealers dont stock beggar all and it had to come from germany!!)

so again, i took the car back did a few miles in it, again did not feel that amazing all of the time, but when it was running right it felt epic,

a couple of weeks ago the car filled the dash of lights....

went onto proper limp mode (2k rpm max) BMW emergency came out and checked the car over, we went for a drive in it with the diagnostics plugged in and the fault was showing as left bank throttle actuator, which was replaced and yesterday i got the car back (by now i have lost all confidence in a car that i have wanted for a very long time) the throttle pedal now feels numb (do they adjust how it reacts when they calibrate the throttle actuators?)

And today... more warning lights.

which relate to nothing in particular!!

to be honest im pretty done with it,

but i waited a bloody long time to get the exact spec i wanted etc. its a 1 owner car with full warranty and i have done less than 2k miles in it,

What do i do!!!!!???

its really annoying me and i am missing my z4m more than ever!!

i have considered handing the car back and asking for a replacement, but there is just not a huge amount out there in the spec colour etc i want :-(

Tough one, I'd be patient and let them do all the work, keep on the case and get it done to your satisfaction. I've had a couple of cars with multiple issues at the outset, sorted by the garage and then run perfectly. Give it another chance, if you searched high and low do you really want to go through that again?

I'd also stick it out. You have a great warranty and in general BM dealers usually get to the bottom of the problem.

I've had my 59 plate M3 for just over a year. Only problem was an intermittent fault with the screen washer motor. I suggested the motor but "the computer said no". Having replaced several other dongles and widgets the computer said were faulty it turned out to be the...........washer motor :-)

My 1 series coupe had the following replaced in the last year (under warranty) but now seems to be fine and I wouldn't consider chopping it in...... drivers heated seat, drivers window motor, handbreak gaiter, rear light cluster, 2x instrument clusters, and a new clutch and flywheel!!!

BMW's are known to throw up error codes if the battery is in poor condition or running low. It could be worth changing that??

I hope you get it fixed soon!

I was just about to say - change the battery - too.
I saw an M5 with similar weird issues popping up constantly and it was all down to a funky battery not giving reliable juice.

Seeing that list in black and white I'd have to agree but to be honest the experience with the dealer was so painless it wasn't a problem.

Needless to say I didn't have to wash the car very often with all those dealer visits which was a bonus!

I had a few issues with both my approved BMW M5'S. Although irritating at the time I had 5 years of faultless running once they were sorted.

Your choice obviously but as previously mentioned at least you are within the dealer network and have the warranty!

Good luck.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? Friday afternoon car? Or quite a common occurrence? Reason I ask I'm looking at DCT coupes now of similar age and milage.

That's hardly a constructive contribution.

It made me chuckle, but still... hehe

Thanks for your responses,

Im completely torn on this one,

Part of me says stick with it, all of the problems will be are are being sorted under the warranty, i get your point on it being painless, but its still a total inconvenience - having to go to the dealership/get my car towed all the time, had i wanted to have a 320ix / 320d touring / 530 d touring over various weekends i would ahve bought one of those lol. but seriously when you buy a car like that you should not be having to deal with the problems it has had

Yes, its the one from JC dundee, 1 previous owner, who is a mate of a mate, so i kinda know the cars history and am lead to beleive it was well looked after prior to my ownership,

A dodgy battery would make sense as its always little 'sensor' niggles that cause issues and nothing like mechanical failure etc. however, that said, the way it runs when its not right are scarily similar to e39 M5 Vanos problems......

This morning it ran great on the way to work and reminded me how much i love it when its not playing up!

I test drove it just after Christmas, lovely car in the right colour, it was more to see if it was practical for us, sadly it wasn't so the hunt for a saloon continues

I'm glad I didn't buy it now, as issues like this can put me right off a car too

Yeah, there isn't enough room to get in the back of the coupe with the little guy without sliding the seat forward, which wouldn't normally be an issue, but the electric movement of the seat was a little slow, and on a wet day would be very annoying

I prefer the look of the saloon too if I'm honest

I seen that car, I'm just not too keen on buying from a dealer that isn't BMW, I'd rather go private and save a few pounds

Doesn't that approach assume that any replacement (circa 5 year old) car the OP sources is going to be fault free?

Buying from a dealer should mean any faults are rectified without cost and with minimal hassle for the cars owner.

With the greatest of respect to the OP it's not like he's just discovered his car is a cut/shut.

Modern cars are complex. Period.
