Here we go again after 3 weeks of perfect running the SMG cog wheel warning light came on at start up and will not go off, the gearbox is working perfect up and down auto mode paddles and manual, could it be a battery problem as it did go flat a few days ago but charged up ok, i have since fitted a trickle charger and leave on as the car is not used every day.

Get a reader, £30 of cutters and you can read the SMG codes too

I once read that there is some sort of sensor near the bonnet. Try slamming it closed and it might go off.

No think he's on about the bonnet microswitch, which is worth a shot for the cost of opening and closing the bonnet.

Still in trouble I have tested bonnet switch OK, tried disconnecting Batt and leaving for a while no change. I have noticed that the Hill Start assist L/H paddle dose not work now, it used to not that I used it much, every thing else works as it should do, I will try to get a Code reader, how do you know what each code means ??? Thanks for all your help

Thats how my SMG problems started, then the SMG Pump gave up shortly after and it wouldnt select a gear. 3k fitted for a new one from BMW, oh the joys!

There's a few sensors on the SMG, mine would act as if it couldn't find a gear at all. Pump was fine, turned out to be one of the three SMG sensors. £240 odd for the sensor, although by the time they'd spent the time identify that and then fix it bill ended up wrong side of £1k. Given the choice I'd have just had then replace all 3 sensors for peace of mind, however it's been fine since then (15k miles).

There's a new company called Partstech just started as a sponsor on M3citters who seem to know their stuff with The SMG box. Here's a link mate could be worth a call.
