You may have seen my earlier Man Maths post comparing F10 leasing with E60 ownership:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I'm back to my original plan of buying a decent E60. At the moment, there's a wide spread in E60 prices from around £12K to £28K, the later being the infamous Hexagon with a 12,000 mile 2008 model. There are several BMW AUC cars around the £19-23K range and they are within my budget. So I've got few questions:

1. Is it worth paying for an AUC model, and if so what's that premium worth? I'm guessing at least the grand a one year warranty would cost.

2. I've heard on PH of people negotiating a two year AUC warranty. Is this true or a myth?

3. Is it possible to get a BMW warranty for a non-AUC car and how/how much?

4. As even the BMW AUC cars are now over 60K I guess I'm looking at fairly steep warranty renewals once the 'free' warranty runs out.

5. I can obviously look up on iDrive when things will need doing (e.g. oil or brakes). How many miles do you think you can push BMW to replace things i.e. if it says it'll need new brakes in 1000 miles obviously that's a negotiating tool but what about 5,000 miles, etc..

Thanks for the help.

I was curious about your question 3, so on the BMW site, I put my own car details in and they gave me a quote.

It's almost 8 years old at 97,000 miles. E46

So if they offered to cover mine, not an AUC, chances are they should offer to cover some of the cars your considering.

@smuler

Are you willing to tell us what the price was? I've seen the website but without a car's details I couldn't get a quotation. I know that they wont cover cars over 100,000 and that the price jumps over 60K but by how much?

Sure MP,

I got £737 for comprehensive, no Breakdown cover, with a £100 excess.
Or £615 (100 excess) for named component cover

remove the excess and it's £857 (NC) and £1039 for comprehensive.

Cheers @smuler - has you E46 been main dealer serviced or by an independent? I wonder if that has any baring on the eligibility of the scheme.

Just need to find somebody with an non-AUC E60 to do the same as @smuler...

In response:

1. Yes - I costed it as the cost of warranty plus a notional £500 for any issues and "peace of mind" so if you can buy the AUC for less than £1500 more than private, buy AUC. So sticker price > £2.5k or less should be ok.
2. Its a cetegorical yes - I have an AUC with a 24 month warranty. The 1 year costs the dealer £300 but a 2 year costs £800. Its worh foregoing discount to get the warranty as a non-AUC Mondial warranty would be at least double and has less cover.
3. Yes - the Mondial warranty is available though car must have full history of servicing using BMW parts (though not needed to be serviced by BMW).
4. Its car dependent but if you start a Mondial warranty before 60k and continue to pay then you are protected from any increase so long as you opt for a monthly scheme.
5. Down to common senseand your negotiating skills!

@MP

Mine has always been serviced by an indy, no BMW main dealer stamps at all.

One item done under manufacturers warranty, before my ownership.

On point 5

For AUC cars I believe that if any thing shows on the idrive that needs doing within 4k, it gets done

In theory it's worth paying the premium for an AUC, but don't automatically assume that the 120-point check the dealer will mention to you has actually been done - I recently bought an AUC M3 that had to go pretty much straight back to the dealership (where it was kept for 3 weeks) after it was delivered to me with a fairly rubbish fault which would have been picked up had the fabled check been done.

On the warranty. When renewal comes switch to monthly DD and it locks the price. I'm on same payment as commenced on 09/2009.
