Hi guys,

It's time for my Front pads and discs to be replaced (I'll take a look, but probably will do the rears at the same time)

Am I best off going for BMW parts or is there a better alternative?

They're OEM discs without the BMW stamp, roughly £80 cheaper. They don't sell the rears unfortunately.

OEM pads are fine for the road, I think they're Textar.

Hmmm, doesn't look like a bad deal at all, EBC Direct want £650 for a pair of their standard discs!

Those EBC discs are nearly as expensive as my PF discs!

Just stick with OEM, they're good enough for road and light track use.

Yeah, I think that's the best bet, not likely to go near a track any time soon anyway.

Cheers for the link mate

Not going to a track any time soon?! What a waste wink

Try eBay for the rears, I think I paid just under £200 which was the best I could find at the time.

There's no better way of getting used to a car than on track!

It might be a little far for you, but this would be ideal - http://www.msvtrackdays.com/car-home/exclusive-eve...

Keep an eye out on Ebay for Ocean Plymouth BMW - they often have standard brake discs for sale at good prices.

Well, I finally got time off the ship and started to have a go at the brakes.

Whoever did them last time is a .

There's not even the tiniest touch of anti seize on anything.

So tomorrow (when I can get a lift from someone) it's off to Halfords (or Screwfix, or RS) for some easy-outs (And possibly a decent blowtorch for heating) to try to get the rounded off screws out (The wee countersunk allen ones that hold the disk on to the hub) and then to BMW to buy some more of the wee screws.

And then there's the wear sensor, which doesn't seem to want to come off the old pad

I figured it wasn't going to be a 5 minute job, but this is beyond the joke.

I just had the front brakes done on my e46 m3 at the BMW main dealers who always look after my cars. fully fitted discs pads and all the ancillaries - 570 quid.

I thought that was a pretty good deal - perhaps a little lower than the standard prices as they have known the car for a few years now, and do all the work on my wife's car too.

They take a few hundred miles to bed in though - so no kamikazi late braking !

Right, Finally got the front axle done!

After much heating, drilling, swearing, tapping etc I finally got the old bolts out and can now drive my car again!

The rears need doing, but I think I'll leave them until after this weekend, as I need the car and cannot be fked with all that hassle again anytime soon!

Well done. That sinking realisation that the job is 8 x harder than first thought is not good...rounded bolts, seized components, niche specialist tools required, start to regret ever starting it...
