I thought that there really weren't any significant model changes through the E63 M6's life... but I drove a 2008 convertible today which seemed a lot faster than the 2005 M6 coupe I used to own. I know the convertible is heavier, but it really did feel significantly quicker.

Is there any reason why a 2008 car should be quicker than a 2005?

There were no mechanical changes throughout the M5/M6 (V10) lifespan, and with the M6 convertible being 200 kg heavier, it really is slower than the coupe. Either your 2005 one had a problem or your memory is playing tricks with you.

Convertible = more noise = adds to the sensation of speed more.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't the noise.

I was wondering if perhaps the convertible with fresher tyres was getting better traction.... but also it felt like the step up at 6k rpm was less noticeable.

Someone suggested that there had been changes to things like gearshift timings etc... I suppose that's not impossible?
