Does anyone with experience know how long it takes to change a steering rack on an E46 M3?

Just want to get an idea for garage quotes

An Indy charged me £75 labour to change it on my E36, doubt the E46 will take any longer.

Good grief, that's a lot cheaper than I would have thought!

Actually quite a straightforward swap as its at the front of the car, access isn't difficult

My indy did mine for £110 but it included a new steering coupler as well as the power steering fluid. I put on new inner and outer steering track rods, new rack and new steering coupler on, and it then felt so much better at the front end.

Only thing is, it may then need tracking doing afterwards depending on how much your having done. If its only the rack, it may not need it.

How come your changing yours?

Cheers for the replies

Steering feels dire, with reaction far more responsive on the left than the right and any small bumps in the motorway throwing the car right out

Had tracking and balancing to no avail

Had it up on a ramp and the only point of play seems to be at the rack end rather than track rod etc

Driving me nuts!

Is it worth considering a rack for a CS/CSL? They're apparently a bit quicker and I think a direct fit.

Oddly, a friend suggested the exact same thing!

Try and find a Z4MC/R one - the fastest rack fitted to a production BMW...

Thats why I changed my rack. I managed to get a CSL one so I put it on. Great mod, just makes it that bit more direct.

If your changing the rack ratio, you should also reprogram the DSC for the rack.

Rack swap is very simple, 1 hour max. Your problem sounds more like a bad bush or shock tbh though.

Fast rack <> good rack.

I had the 1.9 Z3 rack on my E36 and while it was pretty handy on track, it made for some nervous road driving.

I hear you, but on the M3 I think the Z4MC/R would actually be OK...

Work being done tomorrow with instructions left to do a fast road test and notify immediately if they think there are others issues at play as I want it perfect when I get it back

Here's hoping!

Very good point. My car had a CSL rack fitted which I wasn't aware of and whenever I drove other 46 M3's I thought they were a bit slow to react initially. The rack on my car showed excess play and the dealer changed it for an standard M3 item which is when they notified me a CSL rack was fitted, I was initially gutted but within 2 weeks of driving the car I preferred the standard rack as I could be a bit more physical with it. Definitely feel the car is less twitchy on the road with the new rack (maybe a new smooth rack has some part in this.)

Actually, credit where credit is due -

I used ACS Birmingham (www.acspowersteering.co.uk - also On EBay) for a remanufactured power steering rack and found them to be excellent - prompt delivery and the price is based on exchange which they provide a UPS pre paid label for - all very painless and at £136 + P&P a great deal

Hi

Bit of a thread resurrection to the OP

I am in the same boat and require a steering rack for an E46 M3 coupe, I see you used ACS in birmingham and seem very happy just a few questions?
1. They only seem to list one E46 rack for all applications, did you order a specific M3 one as they dont seem to have a specific M3 one listed on their website?
2. How has it been running so far, any issues?

Thanks, really appreciate your help!

OP sold his M3 in the summer so not sure he checks this section.

I'll give him a shout if I come across him on Xbox live.
