BMW M6 - independent inspection for press car
Discussion
Hello all.
Query hope people can help with. I've found quite an interesting 2008 M6, but on closer inspection, it appears that it was a press car early in it's life.
I've looked and as it was a mid life model year revision, it doesn't seem like it spent very long as press car, as was registered with a private owner pretty quickly. It looks immaculate to my eye both inside and out, all service history is fine and well without boundaries (debatably over serviced), and it's fully loaded with almost every option you could possibly purchase (including the competition package).
To assuage my nerves before I take the plunge, was thinking of getting it independently inspected. Does anyone know of a specialist on the M6 that I could pay to come out and take a look at it? I was thinking perhaps Munich Legends, or someone else I had heard of called CPC, but wasn't sure if there was anyone else that was a particularly expert with this model and all it's foibles.
Thanks in advance if you can help

I use CPC all the time - cannot speak more highly of Phil Crouch and his team. They regularly have V10 M5s in (never seen an M6....but it's much the same car, right?).Query hope people can help with. A close friend had a ex-press car (funny story actually...he bought it and thought "I wonder what EVO said about it"....there was a picture of his car, tripoding around a corner!). He drove it hard, but even still, the amount of things that went wrong...especially oily bits... was alarming.
Could you maybe arrange for ML or CPC to inspect it before purchase? Probably....but then again there's lots of other M6s around with low miles and 1 or 2 careful owners... and in mint condition... see where I'm going?
Thanks, thought they might be the best two to ask, will give Phil at CPC a call on Monday and see if he can pop over to check it out. Any ideas what that might cost?
I wouldn't normally consider a press car, but it's the refreshed 2008 model (which there don't see to be many of around) at pretty sensible price, has relatively low mileage compared to other on Pistonheads/Autotrader/BMW Used and reasonable no. of owners (BMW + 2 more) for the time scale, and a very comprehensive service history (all done by BMW garages with proper M experience).
It's for sale at Cooper Cobham, so I'll get all the usual benefits of buying an approved used one (bit of a safety net) so will get a full years warranty, which they have offered to extend for an additional year as they know I am pretty concerned about it's early life.
It's an interesting one, take a look for yourself:

I've reserved it for until next weekend now pending them getting back to me on quite a few queries I have sent across after a good trawl of the forums for common issues last night (plus me sorting out finance/insurance etc), probably on the edge of going for it, but still a bit nervous.
Only thing that is keeping me a bit more relaxed is that it's going to live a relatively cosseted life with me (only weekend use, garaged, won't be subjected to much time spent in traffic, won't be taken on track etc), so hopefully I won't create any additional issues...

One slight problem....CPC are closed all this week for a holiday. Back Monday 12th.
I've heard only good things about Munich Legends too....so do try them in mean time.
Alternatively there's the following thread with many more BMW indies listed (but not certain which would be M specialists too...so ask when you call!)

Best of luck!

Might try the Munich Legends guys and see what the cost is. I am tempted to do without.
As you can probably tell, I'm desperately trying to talk myself into buying it!
I was in a similar position to you 2 weeks ago. I was hesitant over an early E60 M5.As you can probably tell, I'm desperately trying to talk myself into buying it!
Turns out it was nigh on perfect, I got a 2 year warranty, all the mechanical had recently been done and the major warranty components - engine, gearbox, flywheel, hydraulic release bearing - had all been done. The car also sounded and pulled like a train.
I think if you get a 2 year warranty and the above things have been done, you've got a winner.

Looks a nice car and if you are happy with the number of owners and mileage, have a 2 year BMW warranty and keep the friendship with the sales guy so he looks after you I personally would not have an independant inspection but just but it.
Agree totally. BMW prep their cars to a decent standard and if you negotiate a 2 year warranty you will at least have some hastle free motoring for a decent period and you can renew thereafter. In reality, it might be useful if some of the problems manifest themselves during the warranty period as at least the parts will be replaced.
I think an independant review would be lucky to identify future mechanical failure on one of these. If the car was dog or damaged I doubt Coopers would sell the car in the first place.
The only stuff I can imagine that an inspection would pick up would be things like worn suspension etc? The biggies like the clutch need to be taken apart - but a decent test drive would tell you pretty quickly if they were on their way out. With two years for anything else to go wrong and be repaired under warranty you should be fine. Remember the clutch isn't covered though unless you can show it was caused by the release bearing being faulty..
I had an ex press Audi S4 - it had an entire new engine and clutch at 35K (before I owned it) which was a bonus and why I bought the car. Still didn't stop the clutch going again at 80k though!

Red e92 m3? My friend has run an ex press one for 10,000 miles now and it's been perfect.A close friend had a ex-press car (funny story actually...he bought it and thought "I wonder what EVO said about it"....there was a picture of his car, tripoding around a corner!).
