E60 M5 - am I crazy to buy one?

Ok so I have been thinking about buying one for a few years, thing is I have found a very nice one and it works well for transporting the family.
But....is the mpg really as bad as I have read? I know this is probably the biggest issue with these cars but how big an issue is it?
I'm not sure if it is an itch I must scratch or should I be considering something else; ideally I want 4 doors and something a bit different which the M5 ticks the boxes for. The car has AUC warranty and an excellent service history.

Yes, the MPG is bad. How bad obviously depends on where and how you drive. I got about 6.5 km/l over 10000 km and coupled with the small fuel tank (it is meant to hold 70 litres but never got more than 63 in it) my range was less than 400 km, and this was cruising at 160 kph.
If you stick to the speed limit you may be able to squeeze 20-22 mpg out of it, but what's the point of getting an M5 then when you would be better served with a 530/535d?
If it is a daily driver/only car, the fuel economy may get tiring and if you have any doubts about the feasibility of the project already now, I am not sure it will be happy ownership.

I must be driving mine like a right pussy...averaging 18mpg around town and 28mpg on the motorway Leeds to Derby last week! If you're concerned about the mpg then as previous poster quotes you will fall out of love with it soon! My RS4 B5 averaged 22mpg combined and I knew I would get nothing like this, but so far I am quite pleased, however, the car is worth it even if returning a whole lot less! I love it!!

I am looking to get two new cars, depending on what the first car is influences the second. I'm looking to spend circa 50k so yes I am indecisive. It's a big decision and I want to get it right.And previously a Z4

What I don't understand is you are happy to blow £100k on a Ferrari.....

I'm just looking forward to (eventually) seeing what you buy

i've averaged 18mpg in 20k... trick is to let the engine rev and change at 3-4k min rather than let it labour at around 2k which then gives poor economy ime.
whatever way you look at it though, its a thirsty beast and after 2 years ownership I wont be selling anytime soon, as a family car and motorway muncher it suits my needs perfectly.

I have has mine for 2 years and the OBC is showing 19.8mpg. Some SE London driving, some trips to Germany
and some hoons to North Wales/ Norfolk. You should do it... And don't bother with the E39... It is amazing, but it does not stir the soul... The V10 and SMG bring the latent idiot in me every time I thumb the Engine Start Button...

On the mpg front when I first got mine I used to get 12-13 mph with what I would call normal driving, then after about 1000 miles of ownership it through a dsc fault.
Got that looked at straight away and was the throttle actuator on bank 1. That was replaced and then with the same driving style it does 18-19 mpg so that is about the level of normal driving.
I don't think that's bad and then if you want to push it it obviously drops but the sound of the v10 makes up for it.
It was a great car until I had the exhaust changed and now it's almost perfect for what I want. A genuine supercar underneath and a family saloon on top.
Also don't let gearbox comments put you off, if the box is working right and you change correctly in normal use then it is great and when pushing it feels involving.
