As the arrival of my car approaches i start thinking about the little things that need doing such as Cherished number retention/transfer, what i need to take with me when i collect the car & of course how to sync up the relevant devices.

I believe there is no iPhone 5 cradle available so i assume i have to connect the phone via USB?

Does this provide all iPhone functionality for music & BMW apps etc.?
Is the phone connection via USB?
Can the music functionality be accessed by Bluetooth as well as USB cable?
I assume the USB cable will also charge the iPhone?
Is the USB port in the centre armrest?
Can i import tracks onto the HDD from a USB stick?
How many USB ports?
Can i connect up an external USB hard drive?

As i'm taking up biking in an attempt to keep fit, i've just bought a Quadlock to use my iPhone for Nav, bike computer & mapmyride functionality. I've also ordered an in car mount as it looks really slick & solid & TomTom now offer a free iPhone app for speed cameras.

So my question is, would it be possible to hard wire up a permanent USB cable from the relevant in car socket through to the top of the dashboard so my iPhone could be mounted neatly & insight, with a clear GPS signal & still able to do all the BMW related functions as well as provide SPeed camera detection?

Also thing of getting one of the new VBOX's which i'd likely window mount when needed, however with my iPhone also on the dash i could get the relevant VBOX date displayed immediately.

Thanks in advance.

I use an iPhone 5 with my F10, my experience is as follows;

I tend not to plug the iPhone in via the USB port as it then disables the streaming via bluetooth which works but give you limited navigation of your library. Using this method SMS messages received whilst in the car are viewable through the office application, but I have never got the email function working properly....

Bluetooth connection on the iPhone 5 works well and downloads contacts and allows a good clear conversation.

I have an old iPhone plugged in the usb socket, using a normal Apple cable and that allows full control of the iPhone including displaying the album covers. I haven't bothered to load much on the hard drive in the car.

I charge the iPhone 5 via the cigarette socket.

The IPhone apps all seem to work well, but some need you to plug the Iphone 5 into the usb socket, which as I said before disable bluetooth streaming of the music. The apps allow you to connect with popular Social Media apps and view them on the Nav display.......

I have used the Remote app mainly to prove it works, yesterday I did try the Climate Function and set it to come on 10 minutes before leaving work, I forgot I had set it and when I got into my car noticed the fan was running and venting the car, so could be useful on a hot day. It only vents the car and does not pre-heat the car.......

Pretty much exactly the same for me - it's annoying that plugging in the USB means Spotify won't work as in the Mini, it works fine when pugged in. I've never managed to get text messages or emails working onto the i-drove though - what do you need to do to get the text messages up?

Thanks for that, great info.

If the iPhone 5 is connected by USB, i assume the phone pairing via bluetooth is unaffected, purely the music streaming?

IIRC in my GT-R BT music & phone were separate BT functions & i assume this is the case in the M5?

Correct.

I use my M5 as a daily drive and just want to jump in and drive off, I tend to leave the iPhone in my jacket pocket........

Thanks Paul, I'll be sure to remember this thread when the car comes.

Still trying to decide whether to somehow either hard wire an iPhone cable or find a discreet solution to mounting iPhone. Ordered a quadlock car mount but need to work out where so site it? Needs to be visible & have a GPS visibility but don't fancy it suckered onto the windscreen or dash.

Will be used for Speed camera warnings & link to VBOX when playingsmile

With the bmw app functionality on pro media, will there not be some app that has camera alerts that can be downloaded?

Not heard of any.

TomTom are offering a free Speed Camera iPhone app with free subscription so fancy taking advantage as theres is one of the better databases. In the R35 GT-R, speed cameras are built into the sat nav which is a great feature.

Either way you'd need the iPhone in reasonable view to spot impending cash collection devices;).

Does the centre console area have room for some kind of mount? I guess this are would be better for what I'm after as i assume the USB port is in the centre armrest? I hate visible cables in the car (my OCD);)

A couple of things. ....

There is an iPhone 5 snap in connector available. I bought one from BMW direct on eBay.

Secondly, when connected, Spotify works to the extent that Idrive will allow you to navigate the playlist you are in and shows some album art.

That's handy to know as the dealer said they're not available yet. Are the ones on eBay genuine BMW parts?

Just checked on eBay & 2 different part no's. One ending 08 & one ending 07. The difference between these 2 is the price as the one ending 08 is about £150 with the other costing £85. Anyone know the difference between them?

That's handy to know that Spotify will work when using the snap-in connector - can you provide a link to the one you bought?

Thanks

I bought the more expensive one... figuring more cash = better (£160 v £80)
- i think my version has a fan (which I thought you don't really need)... But my iphone comes out of the arm rest really very really warm...

Also, being connected by the lightning port doesn't mean that you can answer a call. You need the bluetooth connection for that... go figure.

i'm not sure what this does better than an iphone cable.
