my e90 m3 has a cameo role on fifth gear tonight - up against R8 V10 spyder/SL63 AMG and Grancabrio Spyder in straightline duel with Tiff at the wheel - you can guess the results...funnily enough responded to a request on here about 6 months ago to bring car along - shame i had not had OEM exhaust mod done then - as it sounds much crisper now

What was the comparison for? Not really rival cars?? What channel and time? I'll take a look.

Has 5th gear moved to discovery channel now?

It seems a really weird comparison for a drag race!

I'll watch it only to see the GranCabrio! Drool!

I think it was along the lines that if you spend £100k+ on exotic dropheads - how much quicker are they than the mundane M3 type of thing - but I am not entirely sure and cannot truthfully remember - their twitter feed here has a link to a very short trailer - it's on at 8pm discovery channel tonight

Didn't think the M3 was shown up; quicker than one of the three £100k machines and losing in a drag run to an R8 V10 and an SL63 is no disgrace! I'm sure it would have fared better still had there been some sort of handling comparison (although I can see you may not have been too keen on Tiff lighting-up your tyres!) and as an everyday performance car the M3 still takes a lot of beating IMHO.

I've always though I'd be replacing my E60 M5 with a V8 Vantage but after seeing that I recon it may be the Audi Cabrio. The wee M3 did well in the shoot out..

yeah - i didn't think it came across too badly - it is not really a straightline machine but i have had an indicated 165 in 5th with a gear to go and don't doubt it would do a real 182 with limiter removed. Anyway in a drag race it had it's arse kicked by a V10 Lambo engined Audi and an SL63 with 663 ib/ft of torque(!) so no big surprise there then!

The R8 would have killed it on the circuit - but i am not so sure about the SL63 and the Maser would not have seen it.

i only spent the morning at Rockingham and was offered for the car to be taken round the track in the afternoon - but i knew the tyres would be fked at the end of it - so i passed - anyway they were quite considerate as i pointed out that i did not want the car to be launched from a standing start and they did the runs from a rolling start - about 12 in all.

I have done 20k in mine now and I cannot think of anything I would really want to replace it with as a work hack - it's quite discreet and as such a good Q car.

I watched that and thought "mmm, 58 plate M3, they must have borrowed that off someone (can't be from BMW), I wonder if they pay for a set of tyres, fuel, etc..."

Why didn't they use a mapped 335d?

Given there was barely half a second between them on a track how do you think the M3 would have beaten the Merc but not the Audi? That's a pretty accurate time.

It is also surprising the difference between a fast car 9second to 100mph M3 vs super cars and a short sprint the M3 didn't know which way they went.

Did you get new tyres and a full service plus valet?

It was an interesting episode. Nice to see some BMWs on the show.

A DCT would have faired a bot better with the quicker shifts and shorter ratios, probably would have been convincingly ahead of the Maser and still a fair way behind the other 2.

Did they pay for fuel and tyres? Was it a fun day?
