So I managed to get hold of a brand new SMG pump for my car after I have decided to break it for parts so I can use the engine in another project.

Ive already got another 2 cars to replace the M5 and have a more serious toy to play in... but I keep looking at the pump and the M5 longingly... head says break it, but I loved it sooo much i'm in 2 minds lol

Repair. You could always sell the car later on, rather than for parts.

I'd repair it, but as you have alternative transport, I can see why this may pose a dilemma.

surely it's got to be worth keeping!!!! Don't break an E60 M5, there are few enough as it is.

Looks like the M5 is doomed.... I decided to buy the parts and fix myself, however when I went to the car today I found the battery flat, bit surprised as its never had a battery drain, but it has been sat for nearly 3 mths so not a major concern...

However the 6inches of water in the passenger footwell is more than a little bit of a concern and almost certainly the reason for the battery drain.... if any of the ecu's are in that region then I suspect this is the end of it frown

No idea how that much water has got in, windows are shut, rubbers all sealed... I can only think that on inspecting the SMG issue something under the bonnet was left opened and water has been flowing off the screen and under the dash somehow... Im a tad pissed off now, sad times frown

You may have crud in the drain holes in the scuttle at the back of the engine bay. Leaves tend to get in there and clog the holes. Water then gets through the bulk head into the passenger compartment.

Do you have a sunroof? It is notorius for this, especially the E61 panoramic one. Blow the drain channels through with pressurised air.

well in the 2 years I drove it I never has so much as a tiny bit of water come in the cabin... gets partly stripped and suddenly becomes a swimming pool in a matter of months... can't believe its unrelated, will check under the bonnet though.

car is now totally dead and given the volume of water its electrics are unlikely to come back to life imo, can't open any of the doors or boot bar the drivers and sunroof is electric.

other than the swimming pool, there isn't any sign of water ingress anywhere.

OK so it turns out the garage left the top off the fuse box under the bonnet and the water has run off the windscreen straight into the wiring loom and thus inside of the car... best part is they must have left cover (a 20 second fit) in the boot which is impossible to get in as its deadlocked.

In fact whole car is deadlocked so other than the drivers doors its impossible to open any of them even from the inside.

Im so upset and pissed off, i was really looking forward to fixing it as the car I replaced it with as my everyday hack isn't oven half as good frown

any way you can get the garage to stump up, or is that not going to happen?

Sounds to me as though the garage is liable. The car is dead as a direct result of their actions.

apparently its not their fault or problem at all!

Not sure what i can or should do about the damage thats been caused... but my main priority has to be getting rid of the water and getting the fuse cover plate out of the boot.

Says who?

If they caused the problem by not re-assembling the car correctly then they are liable.

Surely that would depend on what occurred between andygtt and the garage. Were the garage asked & paid to re-assemble the car or did andygtt take it back in a disassembled state as he planned to break it at that time?

I paid them to disassemble the car, I did not pay them to reassemble.

However IMO its exceptionally unprofessional to leave a car in a state that is going to cause significant damage in areas that are currently perfectly fine... they also never mentioned they were leaving it in a state that requires IMMEDIATE mechanical attention to prevent huge damage.
Bear in mind I was overseas when they diagnosed and subsequently returned the car.

Thats is however all secondary to finding a solution to stop more damage.

poly bag over the fuse box - dry it all out and keep your fingers crossed that the battery drained slowly and not through anything vital.

good luck
