What's happening to E61 M5 prices???
Discussion
I was just browsing the classifieds and noticed that the tourings have dropped suddenly. I thought these would stay strong considering the rarity of them.

Not cheap to run but obviously much more sought after than the saloons - extremely cool to boot!

Is it odd i want one!!!???
Im 30 and have no kids, and definatly no need for an estate car, i travel about 2 miles to work (train) and use my car purely for fun.
The cars i was going to trade mine in for was a CSL, or a GT3....
Why are these on my radar now? They just seem completely pointless for me, but still, i want one.

I'm not sure they've suddenly dropped. I paid £27k for mine just over 2 years ago - 57 plate AUC with 34k miles at the time. It's now just tipped over 40k miles, and compared to those higher milers is probably worth £20k-ish now, which I don't think is too bad depreciation wise.

They look similar in price to 6 months ago to me. The cheaper ones are all 60k miles+ which as most know adds £££££s to the cost of the mondial warranty.
Sold mine about 6 months ago now but still made strong money compared to an equivelant age saloon and not a lot less than I paid for it a couple of years earlier

When the 4 doors start at this price it makes sense. When did this happen!

good customer service from the dealer thus far, made a video for me for the car, looked very nice indeed. still cant make my mind up between that an a saloon.
I don't think anything is happening to E61 prices. When I bought mine early this year there were always ones around for 18k or so that we're struggling to sell. But they were always the wrong colour and above 60k miles. Fully loaded cars in the right colour under 60k are holding their value really well. I'm yet to see one that hasn't had something go wrong (there's one that looks like a bargain but is that due to a new engine after hoovering up a ton of water into it as an example), or be cat D that's the right spec and below 60k for less than 22-23k.

ha! Someone with big pockets and a strong constitution to deal with trying to sell it later!
It was a lovely color combo. Nearly bought it myself...Major put off was the single Bridgestone rear tyre, while the rest of the car was on PS2s... What else has been scrimped on?
Oh come on is this thread for real ?
The previous M5 touring- e34- was made in equally small numbers and ALL were left hand drive.
They have a unique niche following but as a result many have covered well documented miles/kilometres.
An e61 M5 is a rare machine BUT should the fact it has gone over 60k miles really put you off from buying it ?
Imagine the seller - "OMG I'm approaching 59,500 miles best sell quick"
Then the buyer "just found me an e61 M5 with less than 60k miles but I'm afraid I can't drive it anywhere because it will be worth nothing"
PATHETIC

Thats just the state of the market at the moment. When the cars are cheaper it wont matter but you will find an aweful lot of people put off by 60k+ milers just because if the warranty costs. Add in that theres so few buyers for these types of cars anyway it has a big effect on values unfortunately. Roll on a few years when most cars will be out of warranty it wont matter.

To give you some perspective, the E39 540i Touring my wife uses as a station car has 130k on the clock, we bought it from its original owner at 97k. Did the mileage bother me - not at all, but then the car cost £3k. More importantly, I can spanner on it and my eBay sourced INPA/EDIABAS £20 cable/interface does a wonderful job of diagnosing any problems.
My 928GT had 310,000 kilometers on the clock when I bought it. No problem there either - fully rebuilt engine/gearbox/brakes/clutch/shocks. Moreover, despite being a technical tour de force in 1990, it is still an analogue car. Easy to diagnose and work on...
My E61 M5 - now where do I start? In 2.5yrs of ownership, I still could not work out how to use the flippin' aircon. Would I change the clutch myself? NO WAY! Mechanically it is a simpl-ish job, but I would not dream of messing around with the software teaching the box post clutch change. Another interesting phenomenon - rod bearings. It seems that the S85 has an unhealthy appetite for them. Well documented horror stories galore. When they first surfaced I could not give a monkey's - my car was on 35k miles and it was under BMW's Comprehensive Warranty. It was not really my problem. What happens with a 85k miles car out of warranty? What happens when the EDC begins to play up - it is a heavy car and UK roads are not kind to it. I am sorry, but unfortunately, it is not a car, which you can just buy on a chance. Granted, you can change the brakes, filters, sparks etc, but should you have a major problem, firstly the cost of parts is eye-watering, and secondly, you will need a lot of specialist tools. Then you are in the realm of indies - well, the "bargain" M5 does not look that cheap now, does it? Which brings me onto my next point...
Admiral have settled my claim. In theory I should be picking up one of the high mile cars for sale at sub £20k, with a nice slush fund on the size. Having owned one, and seen first hand how complicated from an electronic point of view these cars are, I will bide my time till the right spec, low miles, warrantied BMW AUC car turns up for sale.
