I did exactly the same thing! Now 3 months in to E60 M5 ownership after almost 2 years in my CS. Really enjoying the M5. Totally different drive to the M3, but get it right and it's hugely rewarding.

Hated SMG for first few weeks, but now I know how to work it to it's best abilities after a few months of ownership, even contemplating selling and getting a late 09 early 10 reg, fantastic car ..even mother in law loves it after recent trip to london

Hi

Pre-face lift cars have an old style key? A bit less likely to be stolen than the ones with the slot key?

No, quite a lot of pre facelift cars have the push button start, they changed from a key on late 55 plate cars

yes its fine at the moment - loving the pace which seems to be impossible to use in surrey. Key needs charging - how does that work is it like the old key that use to charge through use?

How are you getting on with MPG and range?

These are now so cheap but talk of low teens MPG at best, and a 200 mile range fill me with horrors.

Range and mpg comes up as the main bugbear with the E60. Can't say its been too much of an issue for me as I do 90% of my miles out of town. Mines sat on 18.5mpg average at the moment, but the last 2 weeks have seen a number of short journeys and little motorway as I've not been at work. At an 80-90mph cruise it'll return early 20's.

Range wise, the worst I've seen is a smidge over 200 miles. The best is 280. I've never put more than 62 litres in on any fill mind you, as I don't like to let it run down too much.

For reference, my E39 M5 averaged 21mpg overall and most E9* M3's aren't much better.

range 220 miles at my average which has been a little off the pace as you cant use 507 bhp in surrey.....

17 mpg.

ive bought at a very nice price which compensates lots of things....
