Possibly a silly question, but how (without risking it on an empty motorway ;-) ) would I find out if my M3 has had the speed limiter raised/removed?

Secondly, is it 175 or 185 mph that BMW raises it to?

Thanks, Greg.

Cheers Ady. Don't suppose you know if BMW did an option to raise it, and if so what to? I think Audi do a 175 raise from the 155 all German cars seem to be set at.

In some markets (which includes Germany) there is an official option to have a 'performance upgrade' which increases the limiter from 250kmh (c155mph) to either 275kmh or 280kmh.

I remember seeing it in the back of my M3 handbook - but haven't noticed anything in the M5 paperwork.

If you check on here http://www.rubmw.ru/vincode/eng/
with your VIN (looks like you need to register now) you get the build sheet.

On mine it's listed as 'S231A Deleted : 250km/h limitation'

With that option there is no engine limiter, just stops accelerating at about 185 (indicated).
