Car went into dealership for what I thought was an oil leak. Turned out to be an overflow of brake fluid which worked its way into the undertray and dripped onto the floor.

However, playing with the car last night, I was checking the service schedule of the car when I came across this:

Is this normal? I know these cars are thirsty beasts and like to drink the odd tipple of 10W60 but the information and the picture seem to be conflicting with each other.

Oil service was done 8 months ago and computer is saying another 10,000 miles for the next one. Is my oil level too low in the car? Or have I got a faulty sensor?

It's low but not too low and doesn't seem conflicting.

Only add oil when it asks for it. It'll ask for a litre, but put in about 800ml. Then, give it ages to reset the oil level indicator. Do NOT keep adding oil!

The S85 V10 likes a drink of oil, especially the earlier engines. Don't worry! smile

It's normal, exactly what he said. No diesel, but it is an oil burner.
If you think about it, they don't conflict.

Yes the oil level is not full.
AND
Yes, it is OK.

But as BP says, you must NOT keep adding oil…..
Serious danger of overfilling….as sensor take an age to sort themselves out

These cars drink oil....fact. The rate of consumption depends on how you drive.

A fast motorway car sat at 70+ all day will see a litre of oil being consumed as quickly as 1500 miles, even less if your hammering it everywhere. A car that does only town driving may only need a litre every 5000 miles. My average for mixed driving was about a litre every 3000 miles.

The important bit is to only add oil when the car says so. Keep exactly a litre in the boot of the car and you'll never go wrong. See Opie oils for good deals on the M-specific liquids.

Sometimes the oil thing can go a bit awry so when it asks for oil (which it will do quite regularly), do a manual check using the stalk button. Mine has been known to ask and then after the check go back to 0.4L.

Anyway, once you confirm you need oil, pop it in in 1L amounts and then forget about it for a while.

I do a mix of 70/30 mway/town and started keeping records from ~60K miles. 1L lasts anything between 750 and 1600 miles for me.

I bank on 20L per year; ~11L for topups and 9L for the oil change and I buy in bulk whenever an offer is on from somewhere like gsf or ecp and get the dealer to use my oil.

Incidentally, I have a 2005 E60 M5 and don't have that second screen (shown above). Or I can't find it? Is that specific to the M6 or later E60 M5s?

I'm not 100% sure as I'm still figuring things out on a daily basis. I was under the impression though that the E60 and E63 models used the same Idrive and all the hardware they run through it?

That screen is in the service section of your Idrive options.

Not in my 2005 E60 M5 it isn't. Just a Status sub menu:

It does display the oil level in the dash though. smile

I take it there's no dipstick at all to double check?

Makes no sense to me getting rid of them.

How did the brake fluid randomly over fill?

Yup...pretty much a sloppy job when prepping the car to AUC standards.

My E60 came back from an oil change 1 Litre under filled, I contacted the dealer and they posted me a Litre of oil.

I have heard rumours it is common practice for some mechanics to under fill and take the extra home.

Luckily my car has a dipstick so no need to dick about with gauges or buttons, it is quick and simple to check when you lift the bonnet to fill the washer bottle.

How long before dipsticks are available again as a high price option?

Check fluid, use the correct CHF11s fluid

Also check belts - 3 in total from memory

Check idle pulley also

If no luck you have to replace the pump as I did. Make sure the fluid level is correctly filled.

Normal and do not add any oil, that level is OK.
How many miles have you done since the oil change?.

John, this an old post of mine dating from December 2013.

I have another 1000 miles left till my oil change. Oil useage is about 1 litre per 1000 miles - normal for the S85 engine.
