I've just took the plunge and ordered a set of winter tyres with a set of 18" wheels. Will be here next week.

Does anyone else run a set of these?

Have 2 BMs & winter tyres on separate wheels for both.

The difference in snow/frost etc is unbelievable.

Hi Ross I did for the winter season last year on my last M3. They were perfect! Hankook ICept Evo's. Looked a bit naff on 18'm rims but perfect in cold conditions with a slightly increased tyre pressure. That said they go off when the Tarmac warms up in late winter so lasted me from Oct to late Feb. Plus meant I could refurb, seal and protect the old wheels in time for summer :-)

I've got Michelin PA4s on the standard 19s. seem pretty good, a bit squirmy at times but better in MDM mode.

My wheels are 18" and coming fitted with Michelin Alpin tyres. I've never had winter tyres before so will be interesting!

I'm guessing they are these http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/michelin-pilot-alp...

Same size all round 245 I think.

Your post finally got me to sort out my advert for my Winter Wheels and Tyres - you would have made a good saving on list price smile

Yes, been running Yoko winters for past couple of weeks on standard 19" wheel. Noticed a little more traction when pulling away, T/C hasn't been as active but not really had any sub zero temps yet to really see what they are all about.

I run Michelin Alpin PA4's 20" /35/255 front 275/35/20 rears, they are great on my LCI M5.

They are 235s all round. Very good for the winter and loosing 30 cm from the rears makes for fun in the snow.

If you lost 30cm it would be very interesting - I think you mean 3cm smile

Does it mean you sacrifice rear grip in all other conditions (apart from snow) though?

When it is dry yes but in cold, wet weather the winter tyres were better.

Now my winters have some miles on them they're brilliant in stty cold wet weather. Much better than I hoped and the grip is pretty good.

I can't imaging the summer tyres on my M5 being as good.

Once the snow comes (which it will wink ), I'll be able to get into work...... frown

I also found that the winter tyres need a few hundred miles at least to be scrubbed in before full grip is established.

Same here, and yes I agree they can be squirmy, they seem to like it best cold and dry and hate 12c and greasy.

After 2000 miles on my Michelin Alpin's 20", they are very grippy but economy has dropped 2.5 MPG consistent, not sure it matters much but thats how it is.
