MOT failed today: one broken rear barrel spring, with an advisory for the other one being corroded. Quelle surprise.
I've got just over a week until the old MOT expires, so I need to sort this fairly quickly either side of New Year.

Would anyone be able to help me by confirming the part number I need, as I'd like to try to source parts myself if possible, to save a bit of money? As I understand it, there's at least two possible part numbers it could be for my car - does anyone know for certain what the right one is?

If anyone can advise too on what's a reasonable 'all in' price for a dealer/indie to supply and fit 2 new ones, I'd be grateful.

Cheers.

I fitted them on my drive before but it's best if you know what you are doing. Costs are about £75 per spring and you might as well get them from BMW.

I thought the MOT changed some time ago so that if you failed the tested, it voided the remainder of your old MOT.

Nope, I made sure to ask the tester....he said it was fine to drive it in the mean time. Reputable place, so I don't doubt he's right.

I'm minded to go via BMW for the springs at least (possibly fitting too if it's not silly money), so I'm covered by their parts warranty if one breaks soon - they seem to be made of cheese so it's likely!

Regular M3 got the same rear springs as the CS after the CS was introduced. There can't possibly be any of the old stock left at the rate they fail.

If its who I'm thinking of he's gone through a pair of rear springs too. One had broken twice!

I had mine changed in 30 minutes but BMW might want to charge you an hour.

If you want the perfect original spec. spring for your car your dealer has an online spring table which calculates the required spring based on the weight of the options on the car.

I heard this too (i.e. there are many different springs)

I've got a spring of of a CS in the garage from my dads. We opted just to replace the whole set with eibachs. I dont know about you but our dealer wanted over £100 for a single spring. Message me if you want it and we'll see if we can come to a deal.

All sorted out today at an indie. £315 all in for 2 springs. "Bloody car."
