Very sad news.

Must have been going at one hell of a lick for it to (hit something and) turn over like that

With respect, it's not really the same thing.

The M5 is lower, wider, longer, heavier than a 2CV, has 10x the power and all the safety electronics you could think of.

Driving the M5 is not for the faint hearted, especially the F10. I'd been driving for over 25 years when I bought my E60 M5 and I have to say its a completely different driving experience to anything I've ever owned. At first, I was finding that I would accelerate to pass some cars in a line, get hypnotised by the brutal acceleration only to find I was going too fast to get into the space I was aiming for and then made myself look like a tit.

Having driven the F10 M5, its even more brutal so as mentioned above, it can and will bite you in the bum if you're not careful.

Its a real shame that someone died.

Very sad news. A little young perhaps to be driving that sort of car? I know I didn't 'slow down' until in my late 20's....

He was 29; same age as me and I'll be picking my m5 in a couple of months. Obviously age plays a part, but I don't think he was too young. It is down to the individual and the risks you are willing to take, assuming you have enough driving experience.

Take my advise Learn this car carefully, it can and WILL BITE. if you do not concentrate when driving hard, one other thing, when in moderate traffic most people do NOT see you coming up or accelerating past them at speed, they assume your car accelerates like theirs and they tend to pull out right in front of you. Be warned.;)

I wouldn't say at 29 age has anything to do with it, I purchased my E63 M6 at 27 and I never found it much of an issue at all driving in S5 mode with TC off 95% of the time.

What I would say could be a factor is his previous experience driving quick cars, but that's just speculation.

Advise noted and appreciated! I know the car has to be treated with respect, especially as I am coming from 260bhp front wheel drive. I am considering having an advanced driving lesson/course of some sort to help me better enjoy the car.

This is the big thing for me with the f10 M5 the acceleration is just on tap, so other drivers can quite easily not know you are there.

Sad news, a good warning for all.

Had an M5 for a weekend trial last year and just recently ordered one. Definitely need to treat it with respect - easy to lose traction and acceleration is amazing but brutal. Through Autumn/Winter I will be treading carefully.

Age has nothing to do with it IMO.

I've been lucky enough to drive some pretty high powered cars from an early age.

Yes, I've pushed them from time to time, but I've always remained (I think) a safe driver and treated the car with the utmost respect.

You could be 30/50/50 + but drive like a complete tt and indanger you, or other road users. That's not to say that the person driving was.

RIP.

I think some treat an M5 like a comfy exec car with a bit of extra poke.
What you actually have is a supercar with plain(ish) clothes on.
Definitely needs extreme respect.

That's a considerable jump going from 260bhp to 560bhp, 300bhp more than what you have now, be incredibly careful.

The effect of the jump will be massively increased by the fact that he's going from FWD to RWD. I haven't found the f10 to be any more challenging than my m3 (343 bhp) or e60 m5 - they all need to be treated with respect and driven particularly carefully in anything other than bone dry conditions. It's also totally true that other road users don't expect such a subtle-looking car to move so fast, so you have to build in a lot more margin for error by them.

All that said, they're amazingly robust machines and I'd rather be in the f10 than many other cars in the event of a serious crash.
