Change Audi B5 RS4 for E60 M5?
Discussion
Hello
I have a lovely B5 RS4 and have been thinking about changing to an E60 M5. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts?
The B5 RS4 is money in then bank and relatively low tech and reliable.
The M5 has an exciting engine, dating looks and is still depreciating.
It's a nice dilemma to have .

For the M5, are you looking under 60k mileage wise or more towards the lower priced car that are higher mileage? As your aware the MPG is insanly bad and the fuel tank is quite small however the experience of owning the M5 is something I will never forget. If it was me, I'd do it within a heartbeat but thats because I'm not a huge fan of the RS4..
Look out for clutch, actuator and any possible gearbox issues. The thread that is sticky at the top is also worth a read, an EPIC car IMO

The M5 is a 2007 with 35k miles.
I love the RS4. There was a very good article in EVO magazine this month about it and Chris Harris gave it a lot of praise.
I used to own a Manual Honda NSX and miss the high revving supercar noise. My Major concern is depreciation. The RS4 is going to appreciate soon. My car is standard with all the extras. The price of Cosworth's and Lotus Carlton's have rocketed. I could easily argue the RS4 is better than them all. I'm worried that with the running costs and fear of reliability the E60 M5 will continue dropping in value.

Get one with an AUC warranty. Even two years AUC warranty can be negotiated.
Then all you have to worry about is fuel consumption, insurance and road tax.
The mpg is poor but since I'll be doing around 4000 miles per year the fuel cost is not a mega issue for me personally. If you are doing over 10k plus miles per annum then the costs (overall) will get scary.

Approved Used Cars.
If you buy from a BMW dealer you can usually get 2 years warranty in the deal and that can make the premium for buying from BMW relatively small.
I'm not sure the RS4 is going to appreciate in any meaningful way in the near future but you are right that E60 M5's are still dropping. There aren't too many Touring's around though so they seem to command higher prices and demand as far as I can tell.
Cheers,
Phil

Drive one. I'm not up on fast Audis, never held much appeal, but I'm guessing that an RS4 will have a turbo motor.I have a lovely B5 RS4 and have been thinking about changing to an E60 M5. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts?

The V10 is all about the top end. A great big giant Honda V-tec if you will, but relatively gutless low down.
Hi mate, I did exactly this. Sold my B5 RS, which was a minter, 77k on clock for an AUC E60 with the same on clock with 2 yr warranty. My Rs4 was pulling approx 490bhp and the thrill of the twin turbos kicking in I do miss I must be honest! I enjoyed the car for most of my ownership, but it was a money pit...alot through choice...but alot of components, especially suspenion related need refreshng. Constant oil leaks was a pain...i just wanted more refinement and the E60 was really the only option in my price bracket (18k) that I knew I could maintain, and was no real backward step in terms of performance. The E60 certainly handles far better, more refined interior, beautiful engine, and I love it!! Dont expect equivalent mpg, 16mpg at best...in the RS I averaged 22/23mpg. It is definitely a move I would recommend. Mine, does, however, only get driven at the weekends, so I still feel I'm in the honeymoon period!! Go for it!

What are your thoughts on price?
E60 M5, Black, 2007, 37k miles and 2 years BMW official warranty. £22800
Sounds expensive, but I'm sure there's room for negotiation there. Also don't be afraid of slightly higher mileages as long as they come with a 2 year warranty. Judge on condition and work done (clutch, SMG pump, clutch release bearing, throttle actuator, etc.) rather than just mileage. At 37k miles it might still be on the original clutch which could be costly to replace if it's deemed wear and tear.E60 M5, Black, 2007, 37k miles and 2 years BMW official warranty. £22800
Personally I wouldn't pay more than £18-20k for one because you'll be looking at quite a lot of depreciation as the F10 prices come down. Also black is a bit boring for an M5 IMO.
A clutch replacement will probably cost you about £3k which may or may not be under warranty depending how you argue your case. The other stuff can be replaced under warranty but will obviously save you a lot of trouble if they've been done already.
Also check the tyres (over £1k all around), brake disc and pads (£1-1.5k all round) and how long until the spark plugs are due to be replaced. You can see the next service intervals on the idrive and possibly use them to your advantage when haggling.

What options, and is it an LCI? What life is left in the brakes and tyres? I sold our 07 LCI privatley 2 mths ago, black with quite a few options and M6 alloys, 48k miles and 6 mths warranty for 21.5k. So may be a little expensive but not too far off if good options and an LCI.E60 M5, Black, 2007, 37k miles and 2 years BMW official warranty. £22800
post a link if you can
Excuse my ignorance but what is A LCI car?
That is a strong price privately. Well done.
I think good, low mileage E60's might stay strong because I don't think as many people lust after the F10. Personally the mute engine and forced sound into the cabin puts my right off. The first time I heard that about the F10 I thought Alpina Diesel for me please. I am sure the F10 is a better car but to me the engine is 9/10 the car.
The MP4-12c is the better car but I bet the 458 will tingle your pants.
I used to have an NSX and my now brother in Law had a 911 Turbo. The Turbo was faster and brakes better but the NSX engine was like turbined lion attack.

LCI is a facelift car, they started around Sept 2007. Helped in getting a good price. Car was nicely optioned and was stunning, Black with Silverstone leather was nice.
Just got an F10 and I doubt your theory that the E60 will hold up over the F10. It is truly epic, forget the piped in noise, you cannot tell at all. the engine has quite a character and the power is unbelievable compared to the E60. I loved my v10 but the game has moved on significantly.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the depreciation factor. Well maintained cars with AUC warranty will hold strong in the coming years. The same rule applies with the E63 M6. Good examples of both models haven't drastically moved for circa 12 months. The last of the N/A V10's and how special this engine is will always mean good cars will always command good money. Only if BMW continue to flood the market with cheap F10 lease deals will values of both models start plummeting.
