I ordered a new M5 on December 2nd and requested March 1st delivery. A couple of days ago my dealer informed me, much to my surprise, that the car still isn't built.

For reasons that are currently unclear, despite my request for March 1st delivery, my car is showing as a Week 10 vehicle (week starting 3rd March), however the dealer appears confident this will be brought forward.

How long does it usually take from the car being built, to it arriving at the UK dealership?

From memory in November mine took three weeks from metal being pressed to delivery.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered from the Chester dealership.

Is there any way to track the car myself?

No worries it takes aprox 33 hours to build.

Cheers John.

I reckon the information supplied to customers during the build process is an area where car manufacturers could really improve upon. For example, why can't the process be photographed and the files be displayed in a user area on the manufacturers website?

Ordered mine just before Xmas and told lead time of mid April by the dealer.

Asked the dealer for an update in mid Jan and was told date had not changed.

Requested an update again yesterday. Hoping and believing the dealer has got it wrong. My E92 M3 took just over a couple of months from order to delivery, although that was through another dealership. 14 to 16 weeks seems a long time for the M5. No fancy extras have been ordered, pretty much a standard spec.

Unfortunately Peter it's "Dealer specific" as regards Build, and quantity of orders received.
The wait will be worth it though.
I put my LCI order in in May last year, got the Car 1st September, thats a long wait.;)

I ordered on the 23rd December and was told build week 06 and delivery approx week 09.

Mine may have been pushed a bit because I spent three months being dicked around by BMWFS and made a lot of noise to both BMW and BMWFS management smile

I may ask that I take delivery in March....this would mean a 2014 plate which would be nice for no reason at all

I must have been very lucky then as i placed my order for my LCi F10 M5 on the 23rd August & collected my car on the 30th September so 5 weeks from signature to collection. I had requested delivery for early November so was pleasantly shocked the order was pulled forward & such a small lead time. That said, it meant i had to send my A8 back a month early as insuring both together would have become a huge issue, but Audi imposed no penalty so all worked out well.

I wonder if 'standard' cars go through the system faster?

I've added a few options (20" wheels, powered boot lid, alcantara headlining, comfort access, reverse assist camera, lumbar support, Harmon/Kardon, pimp glass etc), I wonder if these options add build time?

Unless it's Individual a Special Colour or there is a particular problem with parts availability there is no reason a car would take longer to build.

Ah! That'll be why. I've ordered it in fuchsia pink.
