Toying with the idea of an E39 M5 as a daily / fun car. I know a fair amount about the E39 in general and have read up on some of the weak areas of the M5.

I have searched the usual sites for examples but thought I would ask if anybody on here knows of any particular examples that would be a good buy?

Thanks

I don't know of any either. You could have mine, but I'll never sell it. Find one, buy one, stick some decent pipes on it. Enjoy.

I'm after a GT-R in summer, but the M5 will be staying. They are awesome.

I've just bought one as a daily driver. I've had it 2 days.......why did I not buy one sooner. These are truely awesome cars. Very docile whilst pottering but when you want to tramp on the car is simply fantastic. Buy one, you wont regret it.

Junglie,

I am lucky enough to have one of these beasts, a truly amazing car. Always wanted one and the ownership experience is amazing. I run an M135i as my daily and it makes for an interesting comparison. Whilst the M5 has never let me down, it is a senior beast these days so I would be prepared to accept the regular upkeep and replacing of parts (preventative maintenance etc) as a cost to factor in. They are thirsty too if you intend to use the performance, I see a 18/19 average MPG but can get this up to 25/26 if I take it easy on a run; both costly figures compared to the 35+ MPG I regularly see out of the M135i!

If you like the constant tinkering though and are fortunate enough not to have to worry about daily MPG then DO IT. You will not regret it! The M135i is a really, really good car but it doesn't stop me looking forward to a Sunday morning run out in the Peak district in the M5!

I hope that is helpful,

Rob

I tried it for a month in my M5, doing Swindon to Wembley 3 days a week, my biggest worry was losing my license, even setting off at 5:30 to avoid the traffic.

In the end opted for a beaten up 1.9 TDi Passat sport and save the M5 for sunny weekend fun.

Also worth noting, if your commute is likey to come across stop start traffic, your left knee won't be thanking you after a while.

Thank you for all the feedback thus far. For the 2 who have offered cars I may be interested at having a look depending on where you are - I would much rather buy from someone who understands these cars than a random dealer.

I am going to keep my E39 530i because it is brilliant. I just can't see any new car (M135i aside) for £30k that would be better. However, the used car market is a totally different thing. A 760iL for the daily, M5 for daily / fun and Z4M for the toy and you may even get change from £30k - slightly off topic!

I am thinking that an M5 that has been looked after and had preventative maintenance should be a good bet as long as you keep up with it. I get fuel paid so not an issue and the next 18 months is a daily 40 mile motorway commute for 6 months then a 200 mile round trip every weekend rather than a daily after that.

Bloody PH and the influences - I can never stick with one car!

M5 as a daily, great choice. Keep on top of the maintenance, as you should with any performance car, and it'll have you grinning all year long.

Just get an M5. It's all things to all men.

Talking of preventative maintenance, mines getting new timing chain, tensioner, guides and rod bearings etc soon. That's a £2400 Bill right there

Used mine for 11 months to commute daily from Blackheath to central London, got 9mpg overall. It was the perfect way to start the day, especially mugging through the Rotherhithe tunnel at 5am with all the windows down, it never got old smile
