E34 M5 as daily smoker?

I'm sorely tempted to chuck my 2001 E39 530i Sport + some cash in against an E34 M5, probably the earlier 3.4 car.
Has anyone run one of these as a daily snotter? How do they stand up to modern motoring and so forth?
3.6, you mean. The early cars were 3.6, the later cars 3.8.Has anyone run one of these as a daily snotter? How do they stand up to modern motoring and so forth?
I ran one as a daily back in 2008. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have particularity deep pockets. Most of them are nearly all completely and utterly shagged. An E39 M5 would be marginally more sensible and probably better as a daily.
Don't get me wrong: I absolutely adored both my E34 M5s, but I didn't half get fisted by them!

Heh at fisted.
Yes, sorry, 3.6.
Hmm, I've had an E39 M5 before, terrific car but struggling to justify changing the 530i for one given the other cars in the garage.
Ah, you're the chap who bought Olly's E12. Ask Olly about my M5 ownership experiences. It's enough to put anyone off owning an M car ever again!Yes, sorry, 3.6.

Unless you fancy a resto project, I'd suggest sticking with the 530i.
Oh I'm no stranger to resto projects, I'm the nutter who spent 20k on Citroen DS bodywork and spent 4 x buy price rally prepping the very first prototype RHD 944 Porsche...
Maybe the E34 is just a little bit long in the tooth to make it a sensible prospect for issue free daily hooning. The 530i is a fine motorcar but just a little boring. I'm tempted by an air cooled 911, probably just an SC, but I'm a straight six man at heart.

k's sake, it's Feb and I haven't bought a car yet this year. Something is wrong.

However, I do run it into the office some Fridays when the traffic is a bit lighter and really enjoy it. It's a car that needs a bit of "room to breathe", but rewards hugely when it gets the chance. Plus 99% of people haven't a clue what it is
I'll just leave this here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141186865373?ssPageName=... Nothing to do wiyh me i just stole it from the barge thread
Maybe a more practical but still lovely daily driver.

Do you include the one from Essex in that? I ran one as a daily back in 2008. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have particularity deep pockets. Most of them are nearly all completely and utterly shagged. An E39 M5 would be marginally more sensible and probably better as a daily.

Sadly does nothing for me that 540i. Also my E39 530i would pretty much boss it in every possible situation.
Go M or go home, so they say
Unless you go Alpina B10 BT or V8 Go M or go home, so they say

Having been out in member E24_Man's E34 Touring 4.6, I think it possibly has the legs on my M5 3.8. Or mine would certainly need an awful lot of good pedalling and gear-shifting to keep up

self leveling warning light comes up on dash but does'nt affect the way it drives, this is a common fault
Not convinced. I ran mine as a daily driver for a few years. Echo what people have said. Running costs (i.e. fuel wasn't that bad) but the constant repair costs were huge. Mine was a good base car too. Now many years later, its been restored and doesn't get used that much...
Great cars - not a daily driver (certainly when driving in London anyways).

I had one for a few years, and they do need to be driven frequently. Sadly with the age of these they are now more collector cars more than daily drivers....E39 M5's do the job better and more cheaply. The biggest worry today is parts as some of these are getting scarce and finding somebody who can do the oily bits, like valve clearances etc. Great cars on the right road, 3rd gear is epic, but not as quick as many post 2000 cars sadly. One of the last truly analogue cars, and hand built to boot.
