I am currently on my fifth M car (4 M5's & 1 M3)., so consider myself as a M fan......
Just sitting in my local BMW dealers having my summer wheels put back on my F10 M5, looking around the showroom over half of the cars have M badges on models right across the range, some even have blue M brake callipers, surely this will dilute the M Brand?

I see a nice Estoril Blue 318d every morning. It has these new fangled tiny ///M badges on the wheel arch.
AMG is probably worse, based on the amount of E220 CDIs I see passed off as AMG round my way.

Already happened,
everything is "M" badged now.
Not sure if I will stay with BMW after this LCI M5, may defect to Mercedes AMG's.
AMG has exactly the same issue.

I don't like the thought of people putting badges on to make things seem different (pretending a 318d is an M3), simply because I'm not a fan of showy people. But it wouldn't make me think any less of my car, as it doesn't change how it is to drive, and I couldn't give a crap what anyone else thinks of my car.

I almost like it, actually, I think people get so used to seeing 320ds with M badges all over, when a proper M3 thunders past it gives people a bit of a shock.
M cars have always been subtle muscle, almost Q-car to me.
This is probably true still today considering all the BMW's on the road with M badges. People may ask why one M badged car cost more than the 318d with an M badge, but then they'll know why when you go past it like its going backwards M cars have always been subtle muscle, almost Q-car to me.

BMW Product Marketing - They are the masters of it possibly?Just sitting in my local BMW dealers having my summer wheels put back on my F10 M5, looking around the showroom over half of the cars have M badges on models right across the range, some even have blue M brake callipers, surely this will dilute the M Brand?
Look at MINI.
I quite like the subtle branding of the F10 - you don't know what it is from the front, you have to look closely at the callipers and vent to spot the branding, but by god if your behind it you will know what it is ;-)
A chap at the end of the street with another F10 has stuck a little m5 badge on the front - to me that is showing off.

that`s standard on LCI, or has he stuck it on pre LCI?A chap at the end of the street with another F10 has stuck a little m5 badge on the front - to me that is showing off.
Sorry guys, but who cares?
I love my M5 because I enjoy driving it -i.e. because of the power, refinement and handling - I don't give a sh*t about the badge on the back (or on the grills ).
What amazes me is people write that M is being diluted and "stands for marketing" or needing to go to AMG because M badges appear on other ("non-M") cars. The same people typically claim to be "real" M drivers, whereas they are clearly buying M for the image. If not, why care that a 318 has a similar badge - if you buy the car to drive, what does it matter that a "lesser" model has the same badge.
So, if you want to be able to show off that you drive a superior car, maybe you do need to go to another marque; then perhaps I wont have to read messages from people moaning that their image is being ruined by similar badges on "poor people's" cars. Hopefully, forums like this would then just be frequented by people who buy a car to drive it. Of course, BMW M cars would probably sell far fewer models.

Well said. Cracks me up that so many people get their knickers in a twist.
An average joe that doesn't care about cars may well see a 318D M Sport coupe with it's body kit and wheels in the same vane as a V8 M3 - but if you own the M3 then you get the experience of driving it and the acknowledgement from those that are into cars knowing. If your end goal is for every tome dick and harry to instantly recognise you have spent money on a performance car then buy something else because 1M aside none really have the flashiness of a sports car (a positive in my book)
Those that love what an M car stands for would be far more worried about BMW sticking an M badge on an M6 than an M before M135 or M235 IMO.
