He's comparing the base M4 model to the halo C63 AMG model that has nearly 80bhp over it.

I had a C63 very briefly, it was the saloon model though and couldn't click with it. I thought my older, soggier, laggier M6 was and is much more of an event.

I'm really torn on the new M3/M4. The reviews have not been the best unfortunately.

Is there a non-base M4 model?

What I meant was the Autocar are comparing a standard M3 (no CSL, Competition Pack, Limited Edition, GTS etc version) that has just been released to a halo model of the C63 AMG. Maybe that's why Sutcliffe was left a little underwhelmed by the M3. I daresay, if a similar test is conducted a few years down the line and a more special edition of the M3 is tested (a CSL type special edition for example) the result may be different.

Wait until Mercedes enter into the 21st century.

Their turbo cars wont be any where near as good as BMW's.

500hp from a 6.2 litre NA V8. Hardly a feat of engineering!

The halo C63 model is the Black, 507 is just a run out special and basically the C63 PP+ with some new wheels and options as standard (and a few more HP). With dealer contribution and haggling you could get a 507 down to M4 money when you take the the BMW must have options into account, so this seemed a fair test to me. I certainly wouldn't swap mine for an M4 based on the reviews I've seen, though I will test drive one at some point.

But at least it doesn't sound like a hairdryer. Love my C63. More so than my previous E61 M5.

Thank fk for that. I didn't mind the Chris Bangle cars when they came out so much, but the current range just look incredibly chintzy and cheap. They all look the same. I have no desire to own a current range bmw. E60 and E90 are the last decent shapes, imo

400 bhp from a 5.0 NA V8 works for me.

Personally, I think thew newest shapes are the best in a long time, I don't think the last few M3's have looked aggressive enough except for the CSL. the M4 in the gold/yellow colour and red both look outstanding I personally think.

And........ didnt Merc wring out over 550bhp from the 6.2V8 in its bigger models? As you said, 400bhp from a 5.0V8 is a sensible yet exciting figure. Think reliability vs experience. Audi's 4.2 V8 Twin Turbo only put out 450bhp when it launched in the RS6.

Not I. The range seems to be one car model stretched or shrunk in photoshop.

I've liked all the 3s and 5s bmws, however the last gen 7 series wasn't the beat.

I also like the c class styling but like my f10 m5 the best :-)

Gents you's are talking about an E39 M5. When it was released 15 years ago, 400hp from a 5 litre NA V8 was class leading performance for a mass produced, road car engine.

My point is that modern Mercedes are probably a good 5 years behind the engine tech being put out by BMW. Maybe more....

No at this moment in time, 500 odd hp from monstorus displacment is nothing to be proud of. I think the hp figures per litre of engine displacement that are quoted in that video say it all

Merc 80hp/litre
BMW 143hp/litre

Wouldn't it be better to quote na figures. 507bhp from a 5.0V10 vs the 550bhp+ AMG 6.2V8 is fairly comparable.

With regards to turbocharged engines, Isnt the A45 pissing on your parade a little with a detuned 177.5bhp/ltr?

I've been in at the BMW dealer today, and put together a nice spec on a new M4 to replace my C63 Black later this year. I'll miss the outrageous noise, the aggressive stance, the flared arches etc for sure. Hopefully though a 3.0 - 6 should ensure less frequent stops to quench the thirst of Shells V Power!
Option 2 - keep the car another year to see what MB's counter offer's like?
Hard choice!

I, for one, love the look of the new M4. Nice interior, too.

Interesting numbers certainly but ask yourself: To what is this bhp/litre figure relevant? I mean, how does this affect the car and how good it feels to drive?

Put it another way: you're building a car, you want it to have (say) 150bhp, because it's what the rest of the chassis is designed to use. Is it automatically better to achieve that 150bhp using a smaller capacity engine? Why is a small engine supposedly so much better? Is bhp/litre actually meaningful to the driver? Does that mean you should use a motorcycle engine for any small car?

Are you forgetting about throttle response, power band, rev range, area under the curve?

Mercedes chose the power, and THEN chose the engine capacity for the way they wanted to achieve the power. They looked at how it feels to drive - not what a statistic looks like on paper.

Frankly I'd love the chance to drive both back to back!
