SMG car.

Here are the symptoms:
1. Friday morning, I tried to change from 3rd to 6th at 65mph. Gear indicator just flashed. Same for 5th. 4th worked. After that, fine in all gears since.
2. 5 mins later, my 100mph speed warning thing 'went off' at 30mph (bleep and display on dash).
3. Today, DSC telltale and orange brake system warning telltale were displayed. Only went away after disconnecting the battery.

Given all of the above, I suspect either a speed or ABS sensor fault.

Less likely but also possible: rear trailing arm bush issue (hearing a metal clunk over bumps) causing the car to crab, leading to wheel speeds not making sense to the car's 'brain'. A mate had that latter issue in the past.

Any other ideas/experience before I head to the menders this week? Cheers.

Doesn't sound like it will be, but it's worth keeping in mind. This happened on mine:

Got a spare to try, but really doubt it is the cause, considering the symptoms are all wheel speed related.

The gear issue I had was very brief, but just for luck I'll try slamming the bonnet etc.
thanks for the reminder of that

Fair enough. It was a punt on my behalf as I'm a E92 M3 guy and don't really know the E46 M3 at all. I mentioned it in relation to the SMG issue in particular as it comes up a lot on M3Cutters. laugh

As you say its good to rule it out if you have a spare lying around.

Got codes read this morning. Lots and lots apparently (so many it's hard to know what cause is).

Their working theory is either brake cylinder sensor (or something sounding like that) or steering angle sensor. They cleared the codes and asked me to come back when the fault reappears (i.e. dash lights up again).

Touch wood, it's a quick/easy/cheap fix.

ABS Sensor(s) by the brake cylinder gave me the 2 lights you mentioned in number 3.

I had the steering angle failure between replacing my RTAB's and having the alignment done. That threw up more than 2 lights though. DSC, brakes, TC etc...

Whats the 100mph warning all about though, I've never had that?

In the 'computer' section of the sat nav unit you can set a speed at which it'll do a 'bleep' and display that speed on the dash.
It's a nice way to remind yourself to slow down.

I also found it useful at Brands Hatch because I could tell how good my exit was on the last corner by how early I hit 100 on the main 'straight'!

Ah, I see. I have the business cassette player in my car, that's probably why. Only bleeps I hear are the next chapter whilst listening to motivational cassettes from the 80's ;-)

Well, having had all the fault codes cleared on Monday and put in over 500 miles of varied driving this week (don't ask!).....NOTHING. It seems to be fine ('touch wood!').
