M6GC - who's doing the best deals
Discussion
I've been contemplating one of these but am cooling on the idea a little after I had a day in the diesel, which was almost as quick in the real world, blew me away. Anyway, I was offered around 30% discount based on placing an order before the end of June through Coast2Coast, you won't have top work too hard to match that I reckon.
I am being pushed on the basis that it's almost quarter end and it's unlikely that this discount will be available in July, which may be the case if they've hit sales targets over the last 3 months, who knows? If I was utterly convinced by the car then I would have ordered now on the basis that it's a good deal, but I can't get the diesel out of my head!!

I'm sure the 640D is a wonderful machine but there's no way that it's similar in performance to an M5/6/GC.
The acceleration from the 562BHP V8 TT is quiet simply amazing.
The 640D is very capable, but it's same as the old argument that the 535D is just as quick as the M5.....................
It quite simply isn't.

I'm not suggesting it's as quick, just in real world driving conditions the torque and push is more than enough on the roads I use, got me wondering if the M6 is worth the extra on the basis that the opportunities to dial into its abilities will be few and far between. I mentioned previously that I actually got more fun from driving the family mini one manual than my 991s (now sold), maybe it's me but I'm beginning to question the point of super quick cars these days, although my head is still easily turned!
Edited to apologise to the OP for high jacking the thread, I wasn't trying to turn this into a 640d v M6 debate, maybe someone else can chip in to advise on his discount query.

The point I guess being, do you want the best or do you want to settle for second best?Everything about the M car (not to be confused with the M Sport
) is superior to a lower model in any given range, they've had the money spent on development and hope to be the pinnacle of current BMW technology, everything they can offer to make that car simply the best in its class.Sure it's as quick on occasion, but so is a 120D M Sport in day to day driving.........

Well if you can get the most from an M on normal every day roads, get one. In my experience the only place to get real use from one is on a track. M is Motorsport afterall.
That's a bit extreme. You don't need to be thrashing the b
ks off the M-cars to enjoy what they offer over and above the 35 and 40d. And there are plenty of roads that allow you to get real use out of them.I tried to move from an m-car to a sensible daily runner and got so bored that, within months, I started hated driving - whenever an opportunity presented itself for hoonage that I would have seized in the M-car, I was stuck in something really uninspiring. Sure, the diesels can shift, but they sound crap and run out of puff at silly low revs.

I take it you haven't driven the 640d then? The power delivery is seamless and the noise is more than tolerable. Mrs Blues SQ5 sounds like a V8 (I don't care that it's faux) and I've been mightily impressed with the way high output diesels deliver, although I wouldn't want to own one beyond their warranty date.

That aside, I think the M5/6 is a great car but it's not for the track (for me anyway). If I lived in Germany it would be a no brainer, but I'm stuck on a small, over crowded island with roads full of pot holes and speed camera's placed to generate income, not protect lives. I may well be turning into Victor Meldrew and I may well yet succumb and order an M6GC, just finding it more and more difficult to justify.

That's what I was trying to say, albeit not as well as you. I own a fast car, I very rarely get to use it because of the reasons you state above. For that matter other than badge snobbery I really can't see the extra cash for an M being justified unless you get to properly use it, on such as a track, which surely is the point of the Motorsport brand? IMHOI've driven the 640D GC. It is very quick indeed and the torque made my brain fizz.
"I take it you haven't driven the 640d then? The power delivery is seamless and the noise is more than tolerable"
Well I have and I thought the power delivery was a little humdrum. Not bad, but not as good as the E61 550i I had at the time, and I'm sure a long way behind the new M6.
Noise wise the 640d was indeed 'tolerable' but it was in no way 'nice'. You would not open the window (or leave the door open) when starting it up just to hear the engine, like you would with a V8.
I'd be surprised if someone truly considering an M6 (GC or C) would pick the 640d on any basis other than cost.

That pretty much sums up where i'll no doubt be soon. Got a brand new F10 M5 & love the car to bits but i'm now more than ever warming to the new round of Super Diesels. My first F10 M5 failed & was rejected so BMW lent me an X5 M50D for a few weeks & that car was insane in a way that shocked me. OK it was an X5 albeit the brand new shape but on normal UK roads it certainly wouldn't be left behind by any current M's & on paper is less than 3/4 sec slower from 0-62 with a mountain of torque from the 3 turbos. It drove very well, was a very nice place to sit for a few hours & even when being spanked was returning 35+mpg average. You also didn't get the same cold sweats when parking in less than savoury locations as it looked just like any other X5.That aside, I think the M5/6 is a great car but it's not for the track (for me anyway). If BMW had provided me the M50D as soon as my outgoing M5 failed, i would certainly have hesitated in signing the paperwork for a replacement M5 as i've a feeling the maths on the M50D may also have been more favourable. I'll certainly be looking in that direction when the time comes to consider changing & as an added bonus, the wife adored the M50D in a way no other car i've had has.

No, I haven't driven the 640d or the X5 50d. I've got an X5 40d (for the 7 seats). I'll probably get rid of it next year, for another 40d or a 50d. If they have a better soundtrack than the current 40d, that'll improve the driving experience. Mine sounds and drives like a diesel, albeit a fairly fast one. It holds its own against most fairly powerful cars, but is not exciting by any stretch. If it was my only car, I'd do nothing but daydream about driving something exciting. The M is exciting even when I'm rolling in crap London traffic. Leaving it in manual forces me to focus in a way I don't in the x5; it also requires constant self-restraint. And the moment the road opens up, it devours it. That aside, I think the M5/6 is a great car but it's not for the track (for me anyway). I totally agree about the lack of opportunity to exploit the car's full abilities, most of the time, but I'm not ready to give up yet.
Also, if anything, I find that I drive the x5 too fast most of the time because it's the only way I can stop myself getting bored by it. Same thing happened when I was commuting in a sensible car.

You are so right, I borrowed the 640D GC for a week, it's a nice car but NO M6 for sure, I ordered the M6 GC with CP straight after driving it.The acceleration from the 562BHP V8 TT is quiet simply amazing.

NO comparison at all, the M6 would just crush it.

I find I do the same in "lesser cars", I drive them harder, but as you say the "M" cars just do it so much easier/better, overkill !!! yes probably but I am looking forward to my M6 GC CP coming in September even if I drive it restrained a lot of the time, it's the excitement of the "sudden open road" thing that keeps the concentration and driving enjoyment for me now anyway. Also, if anything, I find that I drive the x5 too fast most of the time because it's the only way I can stop myself getting bored by it.
