So, 10am this morning, Williams Manchester had it ready for me. Mineral White on black. Specced ferric grey rims. Should have specced the black ones! Their demo's "black" wheels looked a lot better.
So coming from a 640d and having previously owned an E46 M3...
Its pretty fast! Still some turbo lag but then shoots off down the road with venom. The DCT is nice, nowhere near as smooth as the 8 speed ZF in the 640 but for when you're in the mood its superior.
It sounds a lot better than youtube would suggest with a loud THRAAPPP on the run off. Certainly turned a lot of heads with one unfortunate van driver clipping the kerb he was looking so hard.
The ability to tailor the various modes is nice, a far cry from the e46.
Seemed wayyy faster than an e92 m3 i drove a few yrs back, in that, it seemed like an age as the motor spun from 1000-5000 rpm, this new S55 unit seemed a lot more willing and that tidal wave of torque at 2000rpm isnt something you'll get bored of quickly!
The plastics in the cabin were a disappointment once i'd had the chance to examine properly at home but the carbonfibre trim, M steering wheel and beautiful seats more than made up for it.
So all in all, so far so good. Who else has picked theirs up?

The wheels you chose are better suited to the Mineral White IMO, so all good.
Got our M3 a couple of weeks ago, agree with the sound comments once moving but it verges on embarrassingly poor from a cold start, where I still think it sounds like a broken moped. I'm sorry, but our previous M135i sounded better.
I also highlighted interior quality as one of my bugbears when I got it and things haven't improved - for a £60k car the plastics are too creaky. I've had some of the dash out and one of the door trims off already to quieter it down (I'm much better at this than any dealer would be). What I've done I've had success with, but it shouldn't be like this.
Chassis still amazes me and seats really are superb but since having the running-in service and being able to properly open it up, I'm getting really p!ssed off with the traction control - it's the most intrusive system I've experienced on a modern car. I can't work out why it needs to cut so much power, for such a long time - for instance, pull out to overtake a car and floor it at say 35mph, traction control kicks in and stays flashing away all the time your overtaking and beyond. This is in the bone dry, in a straight line and no hint of slip. The car feels like it has 200bhp less, and I've driven far more powerful cars which simply do this better. There's a few comments about it on forums so I know it's not just me and I've resorted to using MDM as almost the default, but even this acts like other cars do with traction control fully on.
On balance though, it's still the best car of its type that I've driven - the chassis and how it 'feels' going down the road (very Porsche like is how I'd describe it) is good enough to right any wrongs elsewhere!

The best way to describe the 640d is as a fast limo. The gearbox is absolutely sublime and it cruises effortlessly. The few times I threw it around in attack mode it handled very well and the massive tyres gave it serious grip. But the manual mode is useless-flappy paddles and diesels just don't work. I raced an E60 M5 down the M60 a few weeks ago and there wasnt much in it up to 100. The M4 (although i've only had it a day) feels much much smaller and it makes you drive in a different fashion. Buzz factor is way up there. I did think today that the 6 attracted more admiring glances though, M cars of today seem to need a special eye to be spotted. If i was going to keep one of the two for over a year, I'd have to say the 6 would be the better proposition personally. I think 63k for a souped up 4 series is daft. I won't be keeping it long. For those of you trying to be sensible with your pennies, i'd wait until a decent deal came up, i remember the e92 m3 being offered for £555 a month in 2008 so you never know!

The M5 must have been playing with you, as in "mental Mode" it would annihilate the 640.I test drove the 640 GC and found it quick and it handled well, BUT it's NO M6/5

Timbergiant, how did you manage to get yours so early? Official release and test drives weren't until June 25th?? I had my name down last summer and got the first build slot available at the dealer..?
They pissed me off so badly I told them to keep the thing, BMW UK decided to give me it early, it's the last bmw I'll buy, worst customer service ever, the last three cars over two dealers.JMBMWM5 said:
