Track tires - BMW 1M
Discussion
Hi everyone - need some advice on track tires...
Just finished two days at Spa and more or less went through a set of the standard 19" michelin tires.
The car has a set of BMW 18" winter alloys that I am considering switching to track tires for next spring.
Hopefully lap times will fall, along with the tire bills... : ) and I can stay out longer on track
Any suggestions on brand and type of tire would be much appreciated

They're the king. Not cheap, but should last better than the rest.
How do you get the tyre there? I'd probably look at a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports, what's the point in chasing laptime on a trackday? I'd rather have a fun tyre that I don't need to worry about in the rain.

Thanks for the recommendations
The issue with the current standard Michelin pilot sports is that they last for three laps before they go 'off'
Agree on the fun aspect, but was concerned that even the sport cup would have a similar issue
Don't know if anyone else had a similar experience

Really. I ran the Cups on my M3 and they were fine if you kept an eye on the tyre pressures. Same goes for 888s.The issue with the current standard Michelin pilot sports is that they last for three laps before they go 'off'

Super Sports and Cup/Cup2 are light years ahead of Pilot Sports in terms of how well they handle heat.
I would definitely go for Cup2 if you can get them as a track tyre.
If they need to do a mix of mainly road with some track then Super Sports are what you need. They are a fantastic tyre. You won't find a better cross-over tyre out there.

My MPSS rears are still full of life but the fronts are a write off. God they're great tyres on track though. Was your 1M the one with decals across the rear window & i think fitted with a blower or at least sounded like it did?

Surprised yours went off after 3 laps. Mine just got hotter & super sticky, almost too sticky. The issue with the current standard Michelin pilot sports is that they last for three laps before they go 'off'

Did kill the near side front on day 1 so swapped fronts across to give me some day 2 fun. Both fooked now but the rears are still near perfect. My front temps got up to 85 degrees Celsius when really pushing on. Best lap time was 3.05 & hit a GPS 158 down Kemmel😜

id say if you are doing 3.05s in a 500bhp car max out at 158mph you probably arent going around the corners fast enough or braking hard enoiugh to warm the tyres anywayDid kill the near side front on day 1 so swapped fronts across to give me some day 2 fun. & you could do better? I very much doubt it my friend. My old GT-R was also in our group at Spa, complete with aftermarket brakes, suspension, 650bhp & on track rubber, his best was 2:59 & average lap time of 3:03 so I think I was pushing plenty hard enough in a stock F10 M5, as I did many consecutive laps at 3:06/3:06.
I reckon if i had driven with no concern for my brakes i could have shaved a couple of seconds off & had I fitted aftermarket pads & been on track rubber I'd have got under 3 mins. I think 85 degrees Celsius in my front tyres is plenty hot enough for road tyres.

Lose the 19's for track work and stick to the 18" wheel. I think you can get 4 across the back seats with tyres on so you can drive down on the 19" set and swap when you get there.
Still hoping i can find a solution for my F10 M5 but it would have to be on 19"s. Will watch this thread with interest. My old car (R35 GT-R with more than a few upgrades) with it's new owner did Spa on Toyo 888's & he's running on 20'" wheels. His regular tyre is the MPSS. The 888's performed really well so am going to investigate if they do a size for my car.For the fella above who reckons I should be lapping quicker, I give you the below pro driver lap records:

GTR with 650bhp on semis slicks will be 2;40-:2,45 at full chat or even quicker.
Id say the M5 with 500bhp+ on road rubber should be around 2,55-7, id even say F10M5 shopuld be around 2.50-52 with sme decent rubber

I was very lucky to passenger in an escort cosworth and he did a 2:42 lap, was running about 400BHP but was stripped out. My mate in his supercharged M3 was doing 2:44
Dry lap times of course.
