Just a quick question really.

I have always thought that the facelift of the E39 included an emergency release handle in the boot, a flourescent plastic pull cable tucked into the plastic cover with the pull down handle in it.

I have a 2001 M5, and it's always bugged me that mine doesn't have it, but I've seen other 2001 E39's without too.

Can anyone with an early facelift confirm if they have it or not?

If so, I'm now going to have to find the right bootlid... frown

HOORAY!

It's not been crashed!

Thank you! beer

This leaves me with a clear conscience now when I consider chopping it in. It's by a long way the finest thing I've ever owned, so I'm thinking of p/exing for another one. Bear with me.

I bought this one as it was a cherished low miler, but I wasn't really after a silver one, and I was a bit disappointed it didn't have the DMS stereo. So now I reckon I'll start looking for a black one with a flash stereo.

Changing for the sake of the colour and a 13 year old stereo is even more mental than your original request about some sort of kidnap safety system! Don't. Do. It. By the way silver m5s are the fastest wink

Lots of people seem to be fitting an andrive head unit to e39's lately as an upgrade

I'm pretty relaxed with how daft and mental it is. It could be a case of better the devil you know too.

I would prefer to keep it all OEM, so the android head unit isn't where I'd like to go.

I suppose it's largely that I want something that I could keep for the next 20 years, and if I were doing that, I'd like the very best one for me.

Allied to this is a house move which means going from walking to work to a 6 mile drive. A short frequent trip isn't what I'd like to subject it to, so it'd be putting it into gentle use/semi retirement and getting a runabout. This means I should probably sell my E36 M3 as even I can't easily justify owning 3 cars.

However, there's a blue/silver/cream E34 M5 on ebay which is extremely tempting. That as a rolling classic and a new 228i manual on lease would tick a lot of boxes.

It's a pickle, but one I'm happy to be in. smile

Surely, with this age of car and the fact it's notoriously expensive to maintain, you're better with the devil you know?

If you're keeping it 20 years I daresay you would want it re-sprayed at some point anyway?

I agree, if you have a well looked after example that you know I wouldn't be changing, can you retro fit the upgraded OEM stereo? And perhaps look into a respray or learn to love silver.

With all the logic in the world, I know I should be keeping it. I am also dealing with what feels like the guilt of abandoning it to a potentially less careful pair of hands.

Pistonheads: Providing a conscience for the fickle car owner since 1997!

I am sorely tempted to sink the money I have for the trade/upgrade into lavishing luxurious things upon it too. It's having a front axle refresh this week, all new arms, bushes and bearings, then tyres and a nice alignment.

So perhaps I should try eBay again to find an M-power subwoofer and a DMS amplifier...

Hi,

I'd also say to keep the car you have and perhaps retrofit the oem modules in *if you really must* It'll cost you a substantial amount, it'll be out dated and in a few years time, even more outdated once FM and AM analogue radio transmissions cease as well as CD's becoming even more redundant than they are now. If you then *must* have the oem bluetooth, then already some Android phones don't fully work with such an old system and in the near future, iphones may well stop fully working as well (currently, they have the best chances of fully working). The upgraded audio is called 'DSP' by the way (has a under parcel shelf cabinet for the two smaller 5 inch drivers) and the one above that which essentially is just the two larger 8 inch M Audio subwoofers - all else stays the same. The M Audio option is quite rare to find and also thus quite rare to find the subwoofers up for sale in the classifieds generally speaking. I'd estimate, if you wanted to take a base spec E39 M5 which just has the radio/cassette and base amplifier setup to the full oem M audio setup, it'd cost you perhaps north of £2000. This assumes you'd *want* the television function to work as you'd need the hybrid analogue/digital TV tuner.

On top of all that, the M Audio whilst 'quite good' for when it was around in 2001'ish, isn't that great in terms of sound quality - to some owners though, it is enough, but overall, the general consensus is it's not all that. Also, given the multiple points of failure for each of the modules you'll need, it'll cost significant amounts once those fail. Lastly, there's even more expense if you wish to add iPod control and Digital Radio that can be used with the oem buttons.

Overall, I'd say it's not worth retrofitting it all in, but other's may disagree. Over time, I guess you could spread the cost of it all!

You might then wish to sell and pickup another E39 M5 that's suitably specced AND in fantastic excellent condition AND in the colour you want etc when it comes along, whenever that is!

Good luck whichever way you do decide to go!.. if you do go the retrofit route, I have a fully working E39 M5 DSP amplifier just sitting here I wish to sell on. I have the under parcel shelf DSP sub enclosure as well.

Cheers, Dennis!

Short of finding one from another enthusiast that's clearly been lavished, I'd be wary of swapping.

DSP not DMS... Bloody hell I do that all the time.

Retrofitting isn't out of the question, but it's not likely to be a route I'd take. Mostly as it's not then original. That's probably the streak of autism coming out.

The reliability issue is a known factor, my BM54 unit is currently away at the menders. Again.

So over the weekend I tried to apply logic to an illogical situation. With any sense of logic, an M5 is just not the vehicle for my situation. However, I love the bloody thing. I like the quiet comfort, the mood lighting and excellent heater. I love that this can be mixed with six on the floor, a locking diff and a load of grunt!

So, I reckon I'm going to keep the M5, keep it happy and awesome, but have a gentle eye on the classifieds for a well loved black example loaded to the gills with options.
