So,

I currently have a 2009 Audi RS6. Standard 580 BHP. Warranty runs out in about 5 months. Have recently put new tyres, discs and pads all round at the cost of £3,000.

I am aware that if I have an issue with oil seals/turbo seals, its gonna cost me a pretty penny to fix the RS6 as with the RS6's its often an engine out job, which is costly.

I am thinking of getting a 2013 BMW M5 and wanted to ask about the COST OF OWNERSHIP. A good friend over here in Dubai who runs a service centre for BMW, Audi and Porsche has said that the M5 is considerably cheaper to run servicing and mechanics wise. Its also easier to work on than the Audi, which often means dropping the engine to fix small oil leaks. (I already had the turbo seal done once)

Things I love about the RS6:
- The way it looks
- The interior is the best in class, by far.
- The size of it for the kids and the luggage space
- Its rapid

Things I like about the M5:
- I love the matt Silver with the Silverstone Leather interior. Looks nice in this colour
- The apparently lower maintenance costs
- I already have a BMW E30 M3 and therefore like the BMW's already
- Its also rapid

What you recon? Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations, advice on cost of ownership compared to the RS6.

Cheers

Audi runs out of warranty and will cost a fortune to maintain

The M5 is a better drivers car, has warranty and cheaper to run.

The 4 wheel drive is irrelevant in somewhere like Dubai. The Audi gearbox might work better around the busy town. Fuel obviously not a big issue.

As above really.

I've not owned either the C6 or C7 RS6 but have had extended drives in both & TBH i find my F10 M5 to be the better all round performer.

Yes the C7 RS6 is quicker off the line, yes the Avant is useful if you need a hearse & yes the AWD does have some benefit but don't kid yourself that an AWD car with big fat tyres is any better in poor conditions than a RWD car, the biggest difference is having the intelligence to alter ones driving style when the conditions worsen.

Not as relevant today as in the UK the mega deals on F10 M5's vanished 12mths ago, but over here the lack of interest from Audi in doing a deal meant that for the cost (talking lease/contract hire) of a new C7 RS6 i could almost get 2 F10 M5's with the OTR price of both being identical.

Audi do like to pretend their RS marque needs specialist attention which drives the consumables up but it's pure BS. BMW seem to address this with more sensibility & don't appear to apply a significant M tax.

I am quote tempted by the M5 when they moved to the V8 with Twin Turbos you know, as I like the Turbo feeling I get in the RS6.

So, cost of ownership is ok then? When they get a little longer in the tooth. No common issue with it? Not even Turbo Seals?

Take out an extended warranty and you'll be OK.

I don't know the situation in the Emirates but in the UK all I said was "If you can't offer me a 2 year warranty, I'm going to hang up. You have my number so you can call me back". Later on they called me and offered the extended warranty FOC.

If you don't try you don't get. All major work - expect clutch, brakes etc - will be covered under warranty.
