Am running my E46 M3 track car for about a year now and I am advised to change the big end shells in case they go and throw a piston through the block. Has anyone had experience of this in that engine?

I never heard of such a thing. I tracked my e46 M3 for about 4 yrs. It's probably just a myth. Also check m3forum.net

yes I've heard of it and it is an issue, i keep an eye on things by sending my oil for analysis, they can usually pick up worn shells by certain high readings. Even on the latest platform the z4m we've seen 2 cars on the forum with total engine failure due to spun bearings, this is no myth, OP do a search and prepare to get reading with a nice cuppa.

Much like the M5, I'd wager actual instances paint a different picture from internet perception.
