Looks like i've been playing too hard in my car & the front discs will need replacing after Snetterton next week.

http://email.citnow.com/wf/click?upn=Kg3k4fe6l7Ylx...

Worth pointing out that the consumables on this car wear in a very unusual way & other than the rear pads i'm at a loss to explain how.

Examples:

My car's now covered 17k miles with a good few being on track, including track days on Anglesey, Donington, Nordschleife & 2 days at Spa Francorchamps. The majority of the remaining mileage has been covered by motorway schleps of 200+ miles, intermingled with a few weekend hoons round the Lake District & Yorkshire Moors. Consumable replacements have been front tyres replaced at 6k miles (straight after the Spa 2 dayer) & rear pads at 13k miles (straight after Donington).

I'm still on my original front pads which according to the BMW health check yesterday still have 9-10mm left & the rear tyres which have 4-4.5mm left on them. Now i know the rear pads are linked up to the traction control so when traction is compromised a dab of the rear brakes is applied & thus on track these will wear fairly quickly & i get that the car is a little nose heavy so on track the shoulders of the front tyres are going to take a beating, especially with the MPSS as they get very hot (up to 82 degrees celsius at Spa), but i'm at a loss to understand how my rear tyres & front brake pads can still have a fairly reasonable amount of life left in them & more so that the front discs need replacing soon??

Anyhow, my burning question relates to aftermarket discs as the BMW tax on these bad boys is a little rich even for my blood at the best part of £500 per corner (fitted). I can source some OEM ones from Germany at around £310 per corner but they'd still need fitting so i'm wondering if anyone else manufactures discs that can be fitted to F10 M5 as i'm sure they'd not only be better performing, but likely cheaper as well. I've been very happy with the braking on my car & it's never given me any concerns on the road or track, however i'm fitting Pagid RS29's all round as well as H&R Sports Springs & cladding her in new Tyres before the 4 track days in Europe i've got coming up in October, so it may be a good opportunity to try out some different front discs if available??

As far as the brake pad/tyre wear is concerned I think you've answered your own question. I think you'll find that the stability control exercises the rear brakes a lot more than you might think. Whilst that wears the pads it preserves the rear tyres and the understeer/weight will see the fronts off.

My front disks are wearing pretty fast too - and with no track duty at all.

23000 miles and there's already a pretty good lip on the edges. The other day I bought a micrometer and measured the disks - there is a minimum measurement shown (I forget as I write here tonight) on the hub and I'm not near that.......However I have noticed some cracking around the vent holes which has only just started.

I do remember cracking on my 911 disks and I don't think it generated any concern from the dealer at the time.

I have spoken to Munich Legends and they don't think it's a £2k job to change all four, no firm quote but a grand or so which I didn't think was too bad, that said it was only a verbal quote!

I'm also happy with my brakes, they really do stop the car very well and I've experienced no fade at all and I do give it some stick!

Will be interested to see where this thread goes yes

I don't think the actual purchase price for the discs is that bad so why not just fit them yourself?

As for cracking between holes, not an issue till you get a crack going to the edge of the disc, replacement time thenI was told by AP when I ran them on a SC Monaro yrs ago.

The fitting cost given by the dealer isn't all that bad as for front discs & pads they quoted about £125 so better them do it than me, however just shy of £470 per disc is extortionate & even if i get them from Germany then the dealer won't fit so i'll need to go Indi which is an option.

My ask was what if any aftermarket options exist as i've found in the past that these are often cheaper & far better performing than OEM so i was hoping this may be the case on the F10.

Was aware of the TC killing the rear pads & it certainly does make some sense, however i can't see given the difference in pad coverage/size & no doubt a front brake bias as well as the weight at the front that the front pads could be preserved so well compared to the rears. More amazing is the rear tyre wear which i find almost unbelievable given the usage the car gets.

That's interesting regarding the cracking as kind of what i thought. As you can see in the video above from the dealer, the cracks are at worst about 5mm in length which i didn't think was bad & certainly not a red advisory to get the discs replaced. Are they taking the p1ss?
