What on earth am I hearing?

I took this video as I heard a bit of an occasional ticking sound from the engine when I picked the car up from the bodyshop earlier, very light but definitely in sync with revs. To my surprise there's a loud banging sound with the phone under the car. I swear I can't hear this if I listen myself, unless the mic is right next to whatever it is.

What could that be other than chain slap?

I don't 100% trust the mic on a phone though as I recorded this other video a while ago and it manages to sound like castanets but that sound wasn't audible in the car-

To be clear, this video is just showing how dodgy my phone mic can be, nothing to do with what I'm explaining above.

General consensus on other forums is it's likely to be chain slap and to drop the lower oil pan and check for timing chain guide debris.

You've done obvious things like check the oil level?

Yes I'm borderline OCD with the oil level.

To be clear, despite how that sounds through the recording, I'll be damned if I can make anything out with my own ear, not even down on the ground although I can't get right under the engine. I was initially looking for a slight ticking sound so you can imagine my surprise when that bashing presented itself in the recording.

We couldn't listen directly underneath it ourselves but he can't hear anything that sounds like timing chain issues. He thinks it could be the sound of the VANOS. You notice it more as the revs die down just before idle.
