bmw e60 m5, service gaps? running in service etc?
Discussion
been offered an e60 m5, 2005, that i am considering as a personal weekend car, so wont be doing many miles.
going through the history a couple of things stood out to me, so just want to check if i need to be concerned?
first thing is in the service book the running in service is missing, but there is a gap in the book left for it. im hoping it just wasnt stamped. i will ring supplying dealer and see if it is on record or not
the second thing was there is a gap in the history, and the first stamped service is at 24k 2 years after registration.
history is as follows
08 2005 reg, first service at 24k 6/07
8/08- 35k
1/09- 37k
8/09- 40k
2/11- 49k
8/14- 64k
3 year gap and 15k miles between 2011 and 2014?
i will be chasing bmw to see if anything else is held on record, and any recalls/clutch replacements done
currently on 72k miles and requires a service.
kind regards

the running in service is the one that i want to make sure has been done. i will speak with bmw and hopefully they can confirm.
the gap in servicing doesnt worry me as much as 15k miles isnt too bad a gap, its just the time. its likely someone probabaly did an oil change or 2 themselves maybe and hence not stamped in book, but obviously without proof or invoices etc you have to assume it wasnt done.
the car is cheaper than it should be, so i am taking that into consideration.
what would people say the value would be? 72k miles, all stamps in book are bmw, new mot, hpi clear, black with 5 spoke wheels and black interior, its in very tidy shape and drives very well.
everything else for sale similar is 16/17k, this is substantially cheaper, and from someone i know who has owned it for a year with no issues

I wouldn't be too concerned about the missing stamp, as you say, follow up with the dealer.
The three year gap in the later service history isn't too concerning given the mileage involved, you can generally expect oil / filter services between 12-16,000, as it's an early build car spark plugs will be under their own schedule.

thats my thinking. obviously an impeccable service history would be lovely, but the car is priced very well and so i am taking that into consideration. if it were top money then i wouldnt even bother looking.
the run in service is more important to me, as if that wasnt done, then that would be more likely to cause issues, although if the car is at 72k with no issues then i would have thought any potential damage etc would have appeared by now.

No running service is a no-no. It would have had warranty implications and who knows what else.
I would have thought that a complete lack of running in service would lead to the engine going pop at some point early in its life? (Aren't they supplied with a thinner grade oil from new?)In regards to the actual point the running in service is performed I once looked at a CSL at Snows that had its running in service performed at 2800 miles, when I questioned this I was told it wasn't a concern and that the car would be fully warranted as per any other AUC they sold (it also had AP's all round) Internet opinion/rumour/conjecture steered me away from that one but it does illustrate that not everything is as black and white as forums would have you believe.

will be speaking with bmw to see exactly what was carried out, also have the boxes ticked in the service book to give an idea.
bmw themselves wont sell a car that missed its running in service, and warranty companies try to wriggle out of any repair anyway so unless its a proper bmw warranty they are hardly worth having.
anyway hopefully the running in service was done and just not stamped, thats the most important one for me.
if its cheap enough i will buy it anyway though lol. worst case used engines from breakers are not that much money compared to what they used to be, best case it will be fine and be an awesome car.
as said before, if a running in service was missed, then it would be likely that engine damage would have reared its head well before 72k miles of use. also i cant imagine many people after spending 70k on a new car, that they would just not bother with the running in service! so in most cases if its not in the book, its likely to have been done anyway and just not stamped for whatever reason.

it would be unusual, but people often forget to bring service book in, or have it in the car when the cars being serviced.
i dont understand why anyone spending 70k on a car, wouldnt have the running in service done, as it is required for any factory warranty claim etc, and piece of mind the car isnt going to go bang

Check with BMW to see if it had a running in service.
If not, it's not the end of the world despite what internet warriors may say. Does it really matter if 11 years ago and 71k miles ago the car didn't have an oil change? It's not ideal but if it was going to harm something it would have done by now.
If you get that for £14k ish it's a cheap car

If the car is cheap and resale values is something you're not too worried about then as above go for it, just save some money for "what if's"
needs a big service, 1 wheel is kerbed, someone i know selling and wants a quick easy sale without having to get the car perfect as he is too busy and doesnt really have time for viewings/messers, so i offered him an 'as is' price with no hassle.
he is the sort of guy who buys nice cars, keeps them for a year then wants something else and just wants to move on with minimal hassle.
