Thinking of replacing 640d/r8 v10 with M6?
Discussion
My current setup is a 640d gran coupe as my business car and an R8 v10 as my toy
Both great cars in their own right but I just don't get time to go for drives and the r8 has of late become a garage queen which was never the intention
I'm thinking of a one car solution and love the look of the current m6 or m6gc...
I'd love to hear from m6 owners (current shape not the v10) as ti what they are like to.live and play with. .

I've not driven the new 6 series, I hear generally very good things about the M6 HOWEVER conventional wisdom would probably tell me an M6 is going to have half the efficiency of the 640D, not much more real-world pace if you only drive it in town and none of the drama of the R8.
They are superb looking cars though, I just couldn't ever get my head around the weight of them.

As stated you'd be losing the efficiency on your daily drive and as much as I'm a big M car fan the m6 is not a patch on the R8.
Can you not make time for it? I'm as guilty as you are as do about 1500-2000 miles a year in my toy. This year I have booked track days though
I think the point is as above that real world the M6 would be no slower than the R8 as very difficult to exploit any performance cars upper limits. Can you not make time for it? I'm as guilty as you are as do about 1500-2000 miles a year in my toy. This year I have booked track days though
An M6 will have lower running costs & on paper match or certainly get close to the R8's performance (in most conditions but not all). It certainly won't sound as good or look as good but will return 40% better economy than the R8 & probably 100% more practicality & as you say would be an excellent compromise of both the cars you're looking to replace. Don't forget the M6GC which personally i think looks better than the M6.

As I said I'm a big m car fan, had a z4mc and a v10 m6 vert. Loved the m6 but fun and weight are pretty much mutually exclusive.
Daily duties are now Passat cc and fun is proper fun high powered Westfield cosworth turbo.

By "not a patch on" I mean by the unmeasurable qualities that makes a car desirable. Don't forget the fun factor as well. Not everything comes down to the numbers.

I've had the pleasure of several extended drives in the R8 V10 + & although they're an accomplished car, the outgoing model is very dated inside (similar to an 8yr old A4) & not that quick until you're ringing their neck which is indeed a lot of fun. They look good but again are long in the tooth with the new variant having just arrived. As I said I'm a big m car fan, had a z4mc and a v10 m6 vert. Aural pleasure is epic & how flat/fast they corner is sublime, but a bit of a dated car now & in all but the most extreme conditions, i bet an M6 wouldn't feel out of place playing. I would agree however that the R8 would certainly be the more fun to play in

Ive had an M6 GCP for just over 12m now. A couple of years back I ran an F10 M5 as my daily drive and a 599 as my 2 seat weekend sports car.
IMHO although you may find some pleasing benefits regarding the performance/looks/interior of the M6 vs 640d I dont think that will in any way make up the difference to what you would be giving up in the loss of the R8, I dont think the M6 can replace what you get from the R8, Im a big M car fan and love my M6 but it doesn't cause the same tingle in the spine like the 599 did. Ruthlessly effective and clinical in what it does but it is in no way a 2 seater supercar experience.
You're going to take a hit on the trade in value on the 640d and will be buying another car that will also bring with it a big depreciation hit in the long run, for most of a typical daily drive routine you wont be able to exploit much of the increased performance on most roads vs what you get in the 640d and at the same time you wont have an R8 in the garage anymore!
Just my personal thoughts. Whatever you decide hope it works for you and enjoy!

Thanks for the replies guys
Using the r8 as a daily would be tiresome and the car attracts the wrong attention in town and wouldn't look professional in my job (solicitor)
The daily must be nice but discrete to a point, which the r8 isn't!
M6 will certainly lack the drama of the r8 but something has got to give in this equation ...
Mpg is something of a concern but I think the fact that I've only one car to expense/depreciate it'd somehow balance out or even save me some cash over the current pair of cars

The only issue I can see is is the M6 GC special enough inside....sure it's fast and capable but once you've squeezed the throttle a few times, then settled down to every day driving would it be vastly different to the 640...I'm guessing not.
Have owned one ........... I Agree it would not.Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
