I'm currently struggling to find any modern 4 seat car of any interest. I'm talking about something under £70k, but not a 911, something which is slightly more discrete and can be used everyday.

Something which doesn't weight 2 tons, sounds good, has steering feel, is fun to drive. Tried an M4 but didn't get on with it. Fake engine noise, terrible steering, awful suspension setup on bumpy roads.

So my mind has wondered to the 1M... has anybody owned one on here? What is it actually like to drive/own???

How long a test drive did you have in the M4? the feel is night and day between the different settings for steering, dampers, throttle and gear shift level.

ive had mine for 3 months and only now am i finding the setup i prefer.
Before discounting it i would recommend at least a 24 hour test drive and really experiment with the settings. most dealers will sort that out for you if you are a serious customer. i had an M5 for 2 days and an M4 for 24 hours before i decided. they also gave my wife an X5 for 10 days to test before we decided on what to buy.

if practicality is a consideration then maybe M3. identical to the M4 regarding drive experience just has more doors.

with regard to bumpy roads you are correct if dampers are in sport, its bumpy. sport plus jumps off the road if its anything other than brand new smooth tarmac but comfort setting is fine with the country lanes, A roads and Motorways i drive on in hertfordshire.

as to active sound (fake noise) simple mod to delete that. and add an MPerformance exhaust and thats the noise taken care of. mine was £75K but that also included the full mperformance aero kit., you could easily get a high spec M4 plus MPE for 70K.

I owned an M4. That car sums up everything I dislike about modern cars.

I was hoping the 1M might be more old school, rawer and fun. That's why I'm looking for feedback on that car.

Buy the best low mileage 1M you can find.

I've had 997 and 996 turbos, 3.2 carerra, 993, 997S, RS3, RS4, three M3's and other quick cars. The 1M has a firm ride, but by no means uncomfortable, other than that it's fine for a daily driver. It is more fun than any of my previous cars, partly because you have to respect it. Equally, with all the traction controls on its tame. The steering/feel/chassis etc are awesome , the gbox is sublime and the brakes are unbelievably good. The spec is good too, most have heated seats, nav, cruise, i-drive, DAB, folding mirrors, parking etc. Personally i would avoid electric seats because they sit high. When i get in the car, and blast round country lanes, i think it's the size that really makes it too - my first M3 was an E36 saloon which i loved, but they have evolved into much bigger cars. And they look and sound epic in my view. The fact that it's unique is also very appealing to me, given the M2 is a baby M4 and most of the range is somewhat generic/homogenous.

Cheers
Nick

I'm coming up to 60k miles in mine now and it's great, the seats are a little too hgh (and I don't have electric ones). To be honest it is as raw as you want it to be, With all the traction control etc on it will still spin its wheels in damp conditions but it is quite predictable with controls off you just have to be sensible. It feels like a smaller car than it is but can accommodate four for journeys without any complaints.

The 1M is good but, to my mind, not all that raw. It's an agile little thing, and very quick in gear. And it's practical, the ride is good, it has a rarity factor and so on.

But it somehow lacks some of the M-car magic of the NA cars.

For your budget, if you want good and raw, I'd be looking at e46 CSLs.

FWIW, I've just sold my 1M for more than I paid 12 months ago, banked some cash and bought an e46 CS.

You have honestly nailed it. I've owned 3 CSLs over the years and I utterly regret not keeping one of them. I just don't think I could justify buying one at £60k now when I bought a year old car with 2,000 miles for £46k....

I can't see the CSL dropping though? It's the only car I regret selling too.

Shame the 2ton comes into it over value for money.

You can get a brand new M5 on 0% and probably 5yrs free servicing thrown in for under 60k making it cheaper than its little brother.

It is a big heavy car and feels it most of the time but when you push on the grip is phenomenal as well a the balance, defies all logic.

Its just hard to ignore when its only 15k more than a 5yr old 1 series. But then am sure the 1m and M3/4's do have more fun and sense of occasion which is a big draw. especially if it isnt a daily.

I'm not sure if your doubting it or contemplating it..

either way here's an offer on the table without haggling

http://www.petervardybmw.co.uk/cars/bmw-m/m5-saloo...

Now if you spec up a M3 to M5 standard spec and add on the APR, minus any generous discounts i doubt you'll still beat the m5 deals

Exactly!

Kept looking at F80 M3 but the numbers just don't stack up so my M5 arrives next Tuesday.

I went personal lease in the end and the deposit was half the amount Vardy's are quoting. They also pay the RFL for the term so that's another £1k into the deal over pcp.

Sorry to hijack OP. 1M is a smashing car, rare too, brings a smile to my face when I see one on the road. Good luck.

Seriously contemplating it.......smile

It's just the running costs that need to be factored in, although, I'm only doing about 10k/annum so probably not too bad....would need to spec those wonderful multi-function seats though smile

I was at my dealer last week, and he was trying hard to put me in a M3, but I just didn't get on with the lower spec seats in them now....so he then tried to tempt me into a high spec X6M that they had in stock, unregistered, but offered 27k off list!!!
Still too much, and well, it's an X6M laugh

Trouble was they had a M5 in the showroom as well, and I kept coming back to that (had the multi-function seats specced) and it was just lovely.

Oh well, maybe a trip back there this weekend is on the cards with a print out of that page smile

Yes i also specced the multifunctional seats at only circa £900 it was a no brainer.

400 miles to a tank of £75 is do able on a run if you can restrain

£27k off list is impressive mind

How about an Evora 400? Fast, light, amazing handling, good sound. There are some awesome reviews online. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R1pU_tfMAUY
