How reliable is the M3 and if purchasing I assume people would look for LCI and sub 50k on the clock?

Ideally looking for M-DCT and it would be nice for updated iDrive, but that from what I can see pushes prices to £25k upwards.

Got a 135i E82 N55 at present.

They are pretty reliable, main things to watch out for are the throttle actuators and a leak from one of the gaskets on the DCT box.

I would definitley recommend going for a LCI car.

Life cycle impulse - basically a facelift. My dct E92 M3 has been faultless in 4 years and it does just seem like the actuators that can give up. Haven't heard about dct leaks though.

Anyone advise on how you can tell a facelift car?

Cheers

I thought outside it's things like boot lid, front end, rear lights I think.

iDrive controller I think.

I don't know when the LCI came in, I "think" 59/10 plate?

The main improvements to the idrive (CiC) were included in the 2009 model year car (anything built after the end of August 2008).
The lci rear light change was a bit later...myself I don't get the interest in the rear light cluster change it never looked must different between my 2008 car and my present 2013 car.

the ABOVE link is to a is LCI, aka facelift.

BELOW is Pre LCI with the old I drive

And to, perhaps complicate things, here is a pre LCI with the newer I drive as this, along with the introduction of DCT, did occur before the LCI

This link should clarify significant dates.

In my humble opinion, i.e. I've only driven rather than owned, the car is brilliant with a manual box as well as DCT ; but although I have DCT in my 335i the ones I am considering buying are manual. They put the biggest smile on my face smile

I definitely agree with your point on manuals. Assuming that you enjoy changing gear all by yourself, that is. It is only with a manual transmission that you fully appreciate the throttle responsiveness of the S65 engine. Up and down changes are both a challenge and a pleasure as you need match the revs precisely - thanks to the way in which the engine revs drop instantly on no load/throttle closing.

I had a 2008 MY manual, and now have a 2012 MY manual. There were some changes made (I think for 2010) to the clutch mechanism, which significantly improved progression and feel.

Yeah, I've had mine 3 years now and this was the only major issue I've had, the actuators will break without any warning signs though which is a pain. In North America it was a $3k+ job to replace them but I was lucky enough to get BMW to make a good will gesture as it happened to me just out of warranty.

From memory last time I drove an E9X M3 (for about 40 meters) the clutch had a horrible delay.
I am contemplating an E90 (saloon) M3 or a C63 and I think the M3 would be a finer tool but the engine in the AMG is immense.
That being said the gearbox could sway me also. I was looking at the DCT especially with the issues with annoying nanny-state delay clutches

Mine was sept 2009 and it had the earlier rear lights but it had the updated idrive controller, they moved the heated seat buttons higher up the dash on the later cars too.

Mine was a manual and I really enjoyed 8400rpm in third and then a really quick shift into fourth and that never failed to raise a smile, I do think the engine suits the DCT more though which is against the grain really for me because I don't really like two pedal cars that much.

You won't get any delay from the DCT- Fantastic transmission!

Sorry, I was being specific about the MANUAL gearbox having a delay on the clutch. So when you lift your foot up you can remove your foot fully before the clutch comes back up.

I understand the DCTs are fine.

Also looking at a 335i DCT, I know it's not a M3, but when I did a BMW warranty quote for a 2010 M3 with 47k it's come out at near £1600

I have had mine a year and I still love going out in it on sunny weekends they are great cars,

But for me Its got to be a dct, The low torque engine really suits the dct box, The manual box is hard work with a poor shift and poor clutch feel,

There's nothing better than driving a dct m3 hard the sound of the engine and banging though the gears up and down the box is fantastic,

Two things really.
Why does everyone call this engine "low torque"? Are you all used to remapped 335d's instead of petrol NA?
The manual box is just like any other manual BMW box for the past 25 years, fine, better with a larger clutch stop.

OP. Drive both, see which one you prefer.
