M3 CSL to Z4MR

So... I've been having these thoughts for a little while and I thought I'd open it up to the opinion of the enthusiasts. I'm currently driving around in £35-40k worth of CSL and whilst I don't worry about mileage because it's already got plenty, there's something making me want to change. The car is epic, don't get me wrong, but having bought my girlfriend a Z3 earlier in the year I have a hankering for getting the top down without losing that engine noise I love so much...
My idea was essentially to buy a Z4MR alongside the CSL, swap my APs over (first question, does the Z4MR use CSL brakes? I feel like I've read this somewhere?) and then buy an airbox from somewhere straight away, along with some decent coilovers and nice wheels. All in about £17k.
I quite fancy a black one with black wheels, lowered just a tad but set up correctly (I've also read the rear is too hard and the front too soft?)
What are the thoughts of Pistonheads? Is this a stupid idea?

Interesting idea. Thank god your keeping the CSL, on first glance of the subject thought you were moving out of the CSL into a Z4M and getting rid of CSL. Anyway Love the CSL by the way.
On the brakes, yes Z4MR & C use same brake discs as CSL (had this confirmed last week by Stratstone Hull Parts Dept) i was asking if the discs on the Z4MR were same as E46 M3, and they said nope, they are slightly bigger CSL discs.
As for Black Z4MR there are currently 10 for sale on Auto trader.

Well, if it was me (and its not of course!) i would keep the CSL, use it as a weekend toy (assuming you use it much more now) and get a cheap daily. And not bother with Z4M.The question is, is the Z4MR good enough to replace a CSL?
You currently own the holy grale of M cars (E9 CSL aside!) and whilst it might seems tempting to grab your £25K now, in years to come you could well miss the CSL, and may never be able to buy back into one.
Dont get me wrong, Z4MC/R are great cars and i;ve just helped my mate go from his TTS into one, but not sure i'd encourage to move out of a CSL, unless you keep both forever! then happy days!

I expect you could get much (ie 98%) of the event with a carbon airbox, a remap, some coilovers and have the bebefit (or otherwise) of a manual rather than SMG box. Plus open top.
The question is really what you plan to do with the balance of the cash. Repay a
off the mortgage, some renovations, a slap up holiday, school fees?
Its really a question of whether the utility gained from the spare cash will outweigh the loss (big or small) from not having the CSL.

I think it's a great idea. A friend of mine (Tom) has a Z4M Coupe with uprated suspension, APs, Schrick cams, CSL box and re-map plus a Supersprint and it's an epic road and track car. I have a Z4M Roadster with less modifications (APs, Eibach springs and an Eventuri) but I think I have just as much fun. The Roadster chassis is plenty rigid enough for track use plus I have the benefit of the open air when I want it. Skip through the first minute, here is some footage from a couple of weeks back. You can load CSL 'M Track' software onto these which makes for a big improvement on wet roads and track without having the over-intrusive traction control cutting in.
Your APs will swap over from your CSL both front and rear with only one small issue. The bottom arms on a Z4M are different from an M3, as such the AP kit contains different disc centres/bells and front brackets. You could pay hundreds to AP for the correct Z4M specific parts OR add washers to provide the few mm spacing needed on the brackets and have 2mm spacers machined that fit between the hubs and bells. I chose the latter and ten trackdays later I've not had a problem.
