It's been a while since I've had a fun car, so am delighted to have picked this up today: a pre-facelift, 80K mile, low owner E39 M5 with a nice thick history file. Nice to be back in the land of screaming M-power and my first V8. Just a few things to fettle then hope to be off on a few Euro road trips, maybe starting with the Paris-Roubaix bike race in April.
Nice! I miss my e39 m5 and with hindsight regret selling it.
First thing I'd do if I were you is remove the rear silencers from the exhaust. One of the best mods you can do, the noise is amazing and doesn't drone when cruising. It's cheap as well, I paid a local exhaust company £200.

Mainly on prefacelift cars in this country iirc. I also do not think all that many were sold.
Only 45 RHD UK market Imola Red E39 M5s.Fantastic cars, but do check for rust in hidden places (Jacking points and inside sills, under the fuel tank and rear sub frame, behind the rear bumper, front sub frame ...) as well as the visible places (boot lid, fuel filler seam, above the rear bumper, front of the bonnet, bottoms and rear edges of the doors ....). These cars start to rust badly if not treated at about 10 years or so.
Thanks for the kind comments.
I gathered Imola red is quite rare, it goes well with the black leather.
Had a full PPI yesterday with my local indie, had it on the ramp and plugged in. It's one very sorted car, totally original and a underbody seal and a huge file of work and mots even an original brochure, the previous owners haven't skimped. The few things to sort are the pdc, temperature sender is intermittent, heated seats not working. Mechanically it's strong and very tight.
In terms of what I may do - it's a fun / third car which I won't track but will use for a few weekend trips and general me-time, so I'll give it a few months then see. Initially I've thought about an improvement to the rear sound (exhaust or muffler, don't know which but the you tube vids are interesting), a short shift kit (memories of the throw in my E46 M3 came back yesterday) and an audio/nav update. But we'll see. Should have the things above sorted this week so looking forward to filling it up and getting to know it

What tyres do you have on, what tread depth and what pressure could be the answer to 3rd gear tyre spin.
They're Kumho exsta, not a brand or tyre I'm familiar with, but new all round from the previous seller and only a few hundred miles old when I got the car. I set the pressures at 33 front and 38 rear Fri night, they were a tad lower before but still some slippage.ism123 said:
