Hi Guys,

I have just purchased a F10 M5 from a BMW main dealer with full service history and one years warranty, the car has covered 82000 miles that i know is high for one of these, is there anything i should look out for on the car whilst under warranty, has anybody else had one of these with this mileage ?

Many thanks
Steve

Mine is on 75k from new (2.5 years old) and it’s been flawless - just regular servicing and consumables

Hi
Have the brakes (pads and disks) been changed?
They are expensive (2k+) and think around 40-50k miles is the expected lifespan - what has everyone else found?
Cheers

I replaced the rear pads at about 50k and the front discs and pads at about 65k

Hi all,

Sorry I have just seen these posts as I can't work out how to get email notifications from piston heads,

Really pleased with the car it is using a lot of oil, but I don't think it is out of spec, no other issues than it throwing a Powertrain fault the second day of having it (misfire) my specialist reset and said if it happens again it's most likely a coil pack, not done it since, brake services were done along with spark plugs and intake silencer at 72k oil service , Car is a one owner from Arden Maidstone always serviced at Arden Maidstone and I purchased from Arden Maidstone (car wasn't cheap but I thought having the warranty would be important).

Great cars though really impressed smile

I may be a bit "rare" but if you have a good look through the forums there are some cars with engine issues. My 2012 car with 59K miles just had a big end bearing failure which basically demolished the engine 2 bores badly scored, crankshaft damaged, loads of nice small bits of metal floating around - not much fun! I picked it up with 23k on the clock and 3 previous owners so obviously don't know how it was run in or treated, I guess quite poorly! I have since found out (with a lot of digging), that this is not that unusual with cars that have been driven "hard" which they often are, given what they are. I have a garage next door to me with an Audi "lover" mechanic who had warned me that big ends go on them quite often, just wished I had listened! He says that one of the things to look out for is high oil use - mine started at 1ltr every 1000 miles ish and near the end it was every 800 miles. I have seen advice suggesting that oil samples be sent for analysis, that way you can judge the condition of the engine and if there are any metal "flakes" in in they can tell you where they come from. If I had my time again I would probably do an analysis & if anything was shown get the bearings changed as it can be done with the engine in place from underneath, a lot cheaper than a new engine! The important thing to check is if the running in service was done within the 1,200 mile limit, if not, the warranty is voided, even if only a couple of miles over. It's not as bad as it could be for me as though out of warranty it was always main dealer serviced by me and my garage managed to get a goodwill gesture from BMW - a fully warranted reconditioned engine plus a bit extra. So, all being rebuilt at the moment with new everything, including turbos etc etc. Total rebuild cost would have been an eye watering £37K, so essentially a write off without the engine & support from BMW. FYI, an engine is £18K, the rest is the other parts & labour at full franchised cost, I have to pay £13K. Still love the car!

That's just not true, the warranty is not void if the run in at 1200 is exceeded by just one mile. Like anything, there is an acceptable tolerance and BMW won't retail a car as an AUC outside of this tolerance band.

I bought a car with the run in at 1700 miles, it was being sold as an AUC by Cooper BMW. I have a letter from BMW UK (not the retailer, BMW UK HQ) stating that this is within the acceptable tolerance.

While I was looking I saw one at Berry Heathrow. That car had the run in carried out at 1900 miles. So I would guess this tolerance is any where up to 2000 miles but clearly you're most protected if you buy the car from a BMW retailer.

Don't shoot the messenger! Only relaying what my dealer told me as he said a sales guy neglected to inform one of their customers about the 1200 limit. It wasn't done till 1270 miles and subsequently BMW turned down a warranty claim and the garage is having to foot the bill - so they told me. That's a franchised main dealers words and also what I've seen on other posts. If that's not true then good news, all I know is that I was told if it hadn't been done then there's no way BMW would have given me an £18k engine for free, especially as I was outside warranty

I had to drive to Newcastle and back unexpectly the day before my running in service was booked which took me to about 1650 miles, I phoned the dealer first to check and they said this wouldn’t be a problem. Not sure if it makes the slightest difference but the car was only about 2 weeks old at this point
